Kuro

Kuro is calculating, secretive and intensely controlling. He conceals his intentions for years, maintains a convincing public persona and builds plans designed to erase any connection between himself and the crimes committed on his behalf. He adjusts his glasses with the heel of his palm, a habit developed to avoid cutting his face with his clawed gloves.

His composure gives way to cruelty when others fail to meet his standards. Kuro considers his subordinates disposable, attacks them without hesitation and views piracy less as a source of freedom than as an exhausting life of constant pursuit. His attempt to obtain a peaceful retirement through murder exposes the contradiction in his thinking: he wants security and respectability but refuses to surrender domination or violence.

Kuro fights with the Cat Claws, long single-edged blades attached to gloves on both hands. They give him ten extended cutting weapons but make ordinary actions hazardous, accounting for the unusual way he handles his glasses.

His signature movement technique, Shakushi, propels him at speeds comparable in broad effect to the Marines’ Soru technique. Kuro becomes difficult to follow with the naked eye and cuts everything along his path. The technique is dangerously imprecise, however; he cannot properly identify his targets while moving and may strike allies as readily as enemies.

Kuro is also an accomplished planner and infiltrator. He arranged for Jango to hypnotize a Marine into believing that another pirate was Kuro, staged his apparent execution and maintained the Klahadore identity for three years. Claims that he is definitively the East Blue’s second-most intelligent person derive from supplementary discussion of intelligence rather than a formal title used in the story.

Kuro is the principal antagonist of the Syrup Village arc. Three years before the Straw Hats arrive, he leaves the Black Cat Pirates under Jango’s command and enters Kaya’s household. His final plan calls for the pirates to attack the village while Jango compels Kaya to write a will leaving her fortune to Klahadore.

Usopp overhears the conspiracy, but his history of false alarms prevents the villagers from believing him. Monkey D. Luffy, Nami and Roronoa Zoro help defend the coast, forcing Kuro to abandon his disguise and fight openly.

Luffy defeats Kuro and orders the Black Cat Pirates to take their captain away without revealing the attack to the village. Kuro survives, but the manga does not establish a subsequent return to active piracy or confirm his present activities.

Kaya knows Kuro as Klahadore and trusts him as the conscientious steward of her household. Kuro privately resents tending to her and plans her death, treating her affection as a vulnerability to exploit.

Jango is Kuro’s former first mate and the chief executor of his retirement scheme. Kuro relies on Jango’s hypnosis but intends to eliminate him and the rest of the Black Cat Pirates once they have served their purpose. Sham, Buchi and the other crew members fear him more than they respect him.

Usopp becomes Kuro’s principal obstacle after discovering the plot. Their conflict contrasts Usopp’s unreliable public reputation with Kuro’s carefully manufactured credibility. Luffy ultimately rejects Kuro’s contempt for loyal crewmates and defeats him after Shakushi begins indiscriminately cutting the Black Cat Pirates.
