Gem

Gem is arrogant, impatient, and highly devoted to Baroque Works’ mission structure. He boasts that he has never failed an assignment and interprets loyalty between agents as a weakness when it conflicts with organizational orders.

His temper is as volatile as his abilities. Insults, resistance, and minor affronts can provoke disproportionate violence, including attacks on opponents who are already restrained. He becomes particularly enraged when Usopp tricks him into consuming a projectile filled with hot sauce.

Gem nevertheless works effectively with Mikita and treats her with more professional respect than several other Baroque Works partners show one another. Their confidence as a pair persists even after their initial defeat.

Gem ate the Bomu Bomu no Mi, a Paramecia-class Devil Fruit that allows him to make any part of his body explode without harming himself. He is also immune to conventional explosions, enabling him to consume explosive ammunition and withstand blasts at close range.

His attacks include explosive punches, kicks, and breath. One of his most distinctive weapons is his nasal mucus, which he flicks at targets before detonating it. He can also breathe into the chambers of a six-shot revolver and fire compressed, explosive breath as invisible ammunition.

The fruit’s protection does not make Gem immune to physical force, cutting attacks, heat, or deception. He is defeated when opponents bypass the kind of explosive damage on which he relies.

Gem and Mikita arrive at Whisky Peak after Baroque Works learns that Nefertari Vivi and Igaram have infiltrated the organization. Gem defeats Mr. 9 and Miss Monday when they protect Vivi, but Roronoa Zoro prevents him from completing the assassination.

On Little Garden, Gem and Mikita support Galdino, alias Mr. 3, in his attempt to capture the Straw Hats and the giant warriors. Gem plants an explosive in Dorry’s drink, badly injuring the giant from within and allowing the plot to proceed.

During the final confrontation, Gem’s immunity renders Usopp’s explosive ammunition ineffective. Usopp instead tricks him into swallowing a hot-sauce projectile, and Zoro knocks him unconscious before he can retaliate. A later cover story follows Gem, Mikita, and Miss Goldenweek as they free several former colleagues; Gem eventually becomes a firefighter at the rebuilt Spiders Cafe.

Mikita is Gem’s assigned partner and closest operational ally. Gem coordinates multiple missions with Mikita and generally treats her as an equal participant.

Crocodile is Gem’s secret employer as the leader of Baroque Works. Galdino outranks Gem and directs the Little Garden operation, although Galdino regards him as overconfident and careless.

Nefertari Vivi and Igaram are Gem’s assassination targets at Whisky Peak. Mr. 9 and Miss Monday oppose Gem to protect Nefertari Vivi, and he defeats both.

Dorry is gravely injured by Gem’s sabotage. Usopp outwits Gem on Little Garden, while Roronoa Zoro ultimately incapacitates him.

Marianne, better known as Miss Goldenweek, later travels with Gem and Mikita during the effort to rescue former Baroque Works agents.
