Marianne

Marianne is relaxed, laconic, and habitually unhurried. She rarely displays the theatrical aggression common among Baroque Works agents, preferring to sit apart from a fight while applying her colors at opportune moments.

She dislikes strenuous work and frequently eats rice crackers while others carry out the more physical parts of a mission. This passivity does not indicate a lack of intelligence. Marianne observes behavior closely and knows which emotion will most effectively obstruct an opponent.

Her loyalty becomes clearer after Baroque Works collapses. Rather than abandon her captured associates, Marianne organizes an imaginative rescue effort and uses her abilities to help several former agents pursue peaceful personal ambitions.

Marianne uses Colors Trap, a form of suggestion produced through specific painted colors and symbols. These techniques are not derived from a Devil Fruit. Once a target comes into contact with a marked color, the associated emotion or impulse can override conscious intentions.

Different colors produce distinct effects. Betrayer’s Black causes a target to betray companions, Laughter Yellow provokes uncontrollable amusement, Bullfighter Red directs aggression toward the marked symbol, and Calming Green pacifies the subject. Colors Trap can affect unusually strong-willed people, including Monkey D. Luffy, although interrupting Marianne or obscuring the painted mark can break her control.

Marianne is also an accomplished painter. Her Rainbow of Dreams manifests images of people’s ideal occupations and temporarily alters their clothing to match those aspirations. She carries a palette, brushes, and paints rather than conventional weapons.

Marianne accompanies Galdino to Little Garden, where they plan to capture the Straw Hats and collect the bounties on Dorry and Brogy. While Galdino prepares his wax execution device, Marianne uses Colors Trap to prevent Luffy from attacking him.

Carue eventually disrupts her control and knocks away her paints. Marianne escapes the island with Gem and Mikita after the rest of the operation collapses.

In the cover story “Miss Goldenweek’s Operation: Meet Baroque Works,” Marianne leads Gem and Mikita in an effort to rescue their captured colleagues. Her Rainbow of Dreams reveals the agents’ preferred futures, and several of them later establish the new Spiders Cafe. Marianne becomes known as the “Flag-Bearer of Freedom.”

Galdino is Marianne’s assigned partner in Baroque Works. Marianne’s colors support Galdino’s traps and can be used to decorate his wax creations.

Gem and Mikita escape Little Garden with Marianne and later assist her rescue operation. Marianne treats them as companions rather than disposable colleagues.

Monkey D. Luffy is the principal target of Marianne’s Colors Trap. She repeatedly suppresses Monkey D. Luffy’s hostility toward Galdino until her paint is disrupted.

Carue directly opposes Marianne on Little Garden and helps break her control over Monkey D. Luffy. Dorry and Brogy are intended victims of the operation she supports.
