Futoshi Mochida

Mochida is attentive, knowledgeable and invested in Hokuo's competitive success. He understands that managing a strong club involves more than relying on its best individual player and pays attention to the development of the entire roster.

He can accommodate the forceful personalities produced by Hokuo's competitive environment without losing sight of the team's broader interests. His manner is less intimidating than Sudo's, but his authority comes from experience and technical understanding.

Mochida also treats rival schools seriously once they prove themselves. Mizusawa's emergence changes the Tokyo competitive landscape, and Hokuo cannot continue approaching the newer club as an insignificant challenger.

Mochida is a Class A karuta player in addition to being a coach. His own advanced competitive experience gives him the technical background necessary to train players already operating well beyond beginner level.

As Hokuo's coach, he evaluates lineups, player development and opposing teams. High-school team karuta requires strategic decisions before the cards are even arranged, particularly when coaches must anticipate how five individual matchups will affect the overall result.

His experience also allows him to interpret matches for younger players and recognize tactical or psychological problems that may not be obvious from the score alone.

Mochida appears through Hokuo Academy's role as Tokyo's established high-school karuta power. When Mizusawa first begins competing seriously, Hokuo provides the standard against which the new club is measured.

As the rivalry develops, Mochida remains part of Hokuo's continuity even as senior players graduate and younger members inherit larger responsibilities. His presence helps explain why Hokuo remains competitive from one school year to the next rather than depending entirely on a single generation.

He also appears around major tournaments and qualification events, where his knowledge extends beyond the narrow concerns of Hokuo's immediate matches.

Akihito Sudo is Hokuo's leading player during Mochida's early appearances. Futoshi Mochida coaches Akihito Sudo within a club where the senior player's ability and intimidating personality strongly influence younger members.

Hiro Kinashi is another prominent Hokuo player under Mochida. Futoshi Mochida oversees Hiro Kinashi's development as he takes on greater responsibility within the club after the older generation begins graduating.
