Akio Kitano

Kitano is proud, competitive and outspoken about karuta. He takes his society's reputation seriously and can be territorial about players he has helped develop.

His coaching style reflects confidence in established training and technical fundamentals. This can put him at odds with Harada, whose aggressive philosophy and enthusiastic personality provide an easy target for professional rivalry.

Despite the friction, Kitano's investment in his pupils is genuine. His reactions to Nishida's progress show that leaving the immediate Suihoku environment does not erase the teacher-student connection.

Kitano's principal strength is coaching. As chairman of the Suihoku Society, he oversees player development and possesses enough competitive knowledge to instruct advanced students.

His approach emphasizes the accumulated technical knowledge of an established karuta society. Through players such as Nishida, the effects of that training become visible in high-school competition.

Kitano also understands tournament play and the broader network of societies that supports competitive karuta outside schools. This allows him to evaluate players in a context larger than a single club season.

Kitano first matters to the story through Nishida's background. Before joining Mizusawa, Nishida has already received substantial karuta training, and Suihoku is the society associated with that development.

His appearances broaden the series' depiction of competitive karuta beyond Mizusawa and Shiranami. Players may represent schools in team tournaments while simultaneously belonging to independent local societies with their own coaches, rivalries and traditions.

Kitano's interactions with Harada also reinforce the friendly but serious competition among these organizations. Coaches care about their pupils, but they also want their own methods and societies to succeed.

Yusei Nishida is one of the players associated most closely with Kitano's Suihoku Society. Akio Kitano remains invested in Yusei Nishida's development after he becomes a central member of Mizusawa's team.

Hideo Harada is Kitano's counterpart at the Shiranami Society. Akio Kitano and Hideo Harada represent different karuta communities and maintain a competitive relationship as teachers as well as supporters of their respective players.
