Personality
Personality
Taichi is competitive, disciplined and acutely aware of his own shortcomings. He performs well academically and athletically and appears capable of succeeding almost effortlessly, but his internal standards are severe. Karuta becomes particularly difficult for him because he competes beside people he regards as naturally gifted while viewing himself as someone who must manufacture every advantage through effort.
He is a strong organizer and frequently provides the practical judgment that Chihaya lacks. As president of the Mizusawa club, Taichi manages teammates, studies opponents and thinks about how the entire team can win rather than focusing solely on his own board. He is also capable of overthinking situations and allowing fear of failure to interfere with decisions he could otherwise make confidently.
His feelings for Chihaya intensify his insecurities. Taichi knows how deeply she admires Arata as a karuta player and struggles with jealousy while trying not to reduce his own relationship with either of them to romantic competition. Much of his development comes from confronting the difference between wanting recognition and choosing to continue working when recognition is uncertain.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Taichi possesses exceptional memory. He can retain card positions with great accuracy and track which cards have already been read, allowing him to calculate probabilities and adjust his expectations as a match progresses. This compensates for lacking the extraordinary auditory reaction speed that gives Chihaya an immediate advantage.
His game is analytical and adaptable. Taichi studies opponents, remembers patterns and can exploit information accumulated throughout a match. He is especially effective at maintaining a mental map of the remaining cards, making the shrinking number of unread poems increasingly useful to him.
Taichi's greatest obstacle is psychological rather than technical. Pressure, fear of bad luck and comparison with stronger players can disrupt his confidence. Training with Hideo Harada pushes him toward a more aggressive style, while later experiences force him to reconsider assumptions about talent, effort and the role luck plays in competition.
Story Role
Story Role
As a sixth grader, Taichi is already Chihaya's childhood friend when Arata enters their class. Jealous of Chihaya's growing admiration for the newcomer, Taichi initially treats Arata badly and becomes his rival in karuta. The three nevertheless form a genuine friendship through playing together before graduation separates them.
Taichi reunites with Chihaya at Mizusawa High School. Although he initially intends to focus elsewhere, her determination pulls him back into competitive karuta. Together they recruit enough members to establish the club, with Taichi becoming president and Chihaya captain.
His individual progression is less straightforward than Chihaya's or Arata's. Taichi spends considerable time below Class A despite his ability and repeatedly encounters tournament situations where effort seems to be undone by chance. His eventual advancement becomes important precisely because it requires him to continue competing through that frustration.
Taichi later confesses his love to Chihaya and, after being rejected, leaves the Mizusawa Karuta Club. He begins training under Hisashi Suo, developing an unconventional approach that leads him back toward elite competition and eventually into direct confrontation with Arata.
Near the manga's conclusion, Taichi prepares to leave Tokyo for university in Kyoto. Chihaya finally recognizes and reciprocates his feelings, confessing to him before his departure, and the two begin a romantic relationship.
Relationships
Relationships
Chihaya Ayase is Taichi's childhood friend, teammate and longtime romantic interest. He helps Chihaya Ayase build the Mizusawa club and supports her Queen ambition even when her admiration for Arata causes him pain. Taichi eventually confesses to Chihaya and is initially rejected; much later, Chihaya reciprocates his feelings and they begin dating.
Arata Wataya begins as the classmate Taichi resents for attracting Chihaya's attention. Taichi's childhood mistreatment of Arata Wataya, including stealing his glasses before a karuta match, becomes a source of lasting shame. Their relationship develops into a genuine friendship and fierce rivalry, with Taichi measuring himself against Arata both in karuta and in their feelings for Chihaya.
Hideo Harada becomes Taichi's karuta teacher at the Fuchu Shiranami Society. Hideo Harada recognizes weaknesses in Taichi's mentality as well as his considerable potential and repeatedly pushes him toward more assertive karuta.
Hisashi Suo becomes particularly important to Taichi later in the story. After leaving Mizusawa's club, Taichi trains with Hisashi Suo and absorbs elements of the Meijin's disruptive, opponent-focused approach to karuta.
Kanade Oe, Yusei Nishida and Tsutomu Komano are Taichi's original Mizusawa teammates. As club president, Taichi organizes and supports Kanade Oe, Yusei Nishida and Tsutomu Komano, becoming a leader whose contribution extends beyond his individual results.
