Sakura Kanai

Sakura is calm, patient and experienced. She does not allow Chihaya's speed to dictate the emotional pace of their match, instead continuing to play the kind of deliberate karuta she has developed over decades.

Her demeanor reflects confidence without showmanship. Rather than trying to overpower a younger opponent physically, Sakura trusts placement, accumulated knowledge and mistake-free play.

She is also shown as a mother whose involvement in karuta has continued alongside raising her family. Her daughters accompany her to competition, presenting adult competitive karuta as something that can remain part of a player's life long after school.

Sakura has 35 years of competitive karuta experience and has reached Class A. Her greatest demonstrated strength is consistency. Against Chihaya, she avoids committing faults and patiently exploits the younger player's tendency to prioritize speed over precision.

She deliberately places cards where they are awkward for Chihaya to attack. The strategy forces Chihaya to think about positioning rather than relying on the reaction speed that had helped carry her through the lower classes.

Sakura's game demonstrates the importance of accumulated experience at Class A. She does not need Chihaya's exceptional hearing because her card placement, judgment and control of mistakes allow her to shape the match in her favor.

Sakura becomes Chihaya's opponent during her first tournament after advancing to Class A. Chihaya enters expecting her speed to remain a major weapon, only to discover that the highest class contains experienced players capable of neutralizing that advantage.

Sakura steadily moves cards into positions Chihaya finds difficult and refuses to give away points through faults. The match becomes an early lesson in how much Chihaya still has to learn about placement and accuracy.

Sakura defeats Chihaya, making the encounter an important early setback in Chihaya's Class A development. The loss forces Chihaya to reconsider the idea that becoming Class A means she is already close to Queen-level karuta.

Chihaya Ayase faces Sakura during Chihaya's early experience as a Class A player. Sakura's controlled game exposes weaknesses in Chihaya Ayase's reliance on speed and gives the younger player a practical lesson in experienced Class A karuta.

Tsubaki Kanai is Sakura's older daughter and accompanies her during the tournament.

Kaede Kanai is Sakura's younger daughter and is likewise present while her mother competes.
