Story Role

Suou enters the story as the dominant male figure in competitive karuta. Unlike players who have trained since childhood, he began at university and reached Meijin with extraordinary speed, making his ability difficult for conventional teachers and competitors to explain.

His presence gives Chihaya another example of exceptional hearing while also showing her a completely different way that such sensitivity can shape a player. Where Chihaya instinctively attacks, Suou uses sound and movement to disrupt opponents.

His championship defense against Harada brings him into direct conflict with the Shiranami Society. The match exposes weaknesses beneath his apparently effortless dominance and forces him to compete against an opponent who refuses to be psychologically broken by his usual methods.

Taichi later spends significant time training with Suou after leaving the Mizusawa club. Suou's opponent-focused style influences Taichi's karuta and gives him an alternative to trying to imitate Chihaya or Arata.

Suou ultimately faces Arata in the Meijin match. Despite his worsening eyesight and Arata's challenge, Suou successfully retains the title, extending a career he had previously spoken about ending.
