Franklin's father is elderly, concerned, and more cautious than his son. He worries that Franklin's political writing will bring the State Security Service to their home.
He does not appear enthusiastic about the danger involved in anti-government publishing, but he understands that Franklin's actions are partly motivated by the family's poverty.
His relationship with Franklin is affectionate despite their difficult circumstances. Their private conversations reveal a family bond that Yuri did not expect to find behind the politically hostile material he had been investigating.

During surveillance, Yuri overhears Franklin discussing money and family with his father. Franklin expresses the desire to support him and reflects on their inability to afford better care during his mother's illness.
The conversation momentarily complicates Yuri's view of his target. Franklin is still committing crimes in the eyes of the SSS, but his family motivation mirrors Yuri's own devotion to Yor.
When Franklin is eventually arrested, Yuri deliberately keeps the arrest away from his father's immediate view and promises to arrange financial assistance for the elderly man. Franklin thanks him sincerely before being taken into custody.
