Anya Forger

Anya's earliest known life was spent as a test subject identified as Subject 007. An unidentified organization experimented on her, and her telepathic ability emerged during that period. The researchers expected her to devote herself to study and discouraged ordinary childhood behavior, leaving her with an enduring dislike of intensive academic work. She eventually escaped from the facility, but the circumstances of both her creation and escape remain largely unexplained.

Afterward, Anya moved through several families and orphanages. She was adopted and returned multiple times before eventually arriving at the orphanage where Loid encountered her. The experience left her highly sensitive to the possibility of abandonment. When she realizes through telepathy that Loid is secretly a spy and needs a child for an important mission, she deliberately presents herself as old and intelligent enough to satisfy his requirements.

Loid adopts her as part of Operation Strix, his assignment to establish contact with Donovan Desmond. Because Donovan rarely appears outside functions connected to Eden Academy, Loid requires a child who can enter the school and eventually become an Imperial Scholar. Anya therefore becomes both his legal daughter and an unknowingly indispensable participant in his intelligence operation.

Her telepathy soon allows her to discover that Loid is the Westalian spy Twilight. When Loid later enters a marriage of convenience with Yor, Anya also learns that her new mother secretly works as an assassin. Rather than exposing either secret, she enthusiastically accepts the unusual family arrangement. Her knowledge means she understands more about the Forger household than either adult realizes, even though her childish interpretation of their thoughts often causes misunderstandings.

The family later adopts Bond, a large dog capable of seeing glimpses of the future. Anya learns of his precognition through telepathy and becomes the only family member who fully understands the combination of abilities the two possess. The pair frequently cooperate without being able to explain to Loid or Yor how they obtained their information.

Anya is energetic, curious and strongly attracted to anything she associates with spies, secret missions or adventure. Much of her understanding of espionage comes from the fictional television program Spy Wars, whose hero Bondman becomes one of her idols. Consequently, the comparatively grim realities of Loid's profession initially register to her as exciting adventures rather than geopolitical conflicts.

Her speech, reasoning and attention span consistently reflect her youth. She misunderstands unfamiliar terminology, struggles with complicated explanations and frequently takes statements more literally than intended. Telepathy does not compensate fully for these limitations; reading an adult's thoughts gives her access to information without necessarily giving her enough context to interpret it correctly.

She is also expressive to an unusual degree. Surprise, fear, smugness, excitement and suspicion rapidly appear on her face, and she has difficulty maintaining convincing lies under pressure. At the same time, Anya can be remarkably resourceful when she understands that someone is in danger. She has repeatedly used information obtained telepathically to influence adults without revealing where that information came from.

Her greatest emotional concern is preserving the Forger family. Earlier experiences with adoption have made her afraid that failure—particularly failure at Eden—could cause Loid to abandon her. She therefore treats Operation Strix as something more personal than an intelligence assignment. In her mind, helping the mission succeed also helps ensure that Loid and Yor remain her parents.

Anya is compassionate despite her occasional selfishness, boasting and competitiveness. She has endangered herself to help strangers, defended classmates she believed were being treated unfairly, and shown concern for people whose thoughts reveal distress even when their outward behavior is hostile. Her reactions remain recognizably childish: courage can be followed immediately by panic, while sincere acts of kindness can coexist with a desire for praise, Stella Stars or rewards.

Anya is a very small child with pink hair and large green eyes. The official SPY×FAMILY Official Fanbook: EYES ONLY gives her height at Eden Academy enrollment as 99.5 cm, making her noticeably shorter than most of her classmates. Her size is also one of the reasons Loid doubts her claim of being six and initially estimates her to be approximately four or five years old.

Her hair reaches roughly to her neck and forms short outward-pointing sections around the sides and back. She typically wears two black, cone-shaped hair ornaments decorated with gold trim. The accessories are among the most recognizable parts of her design, although the story has not established them as a source of her telepathy or given them any confirmed supernatural function.

At Eden Academy, Anya wears the school's formal black uniform with gold detailing, a white shirt and ribbon, knee-length socks and school shoes. Eden's uniform and elaborate insignia reinforce the school's aristocratic culture, contrasting with Anya's comparatively modest background and lack of familiarity with elite social etiquette.

Outside school, she wears a variety of dresses, coats, pajamas and casual outfits. One recurring early outfit is a simple black dress with a white ribbon at the collar. Her facial expressions are particularly exaggerated compared with many of the surrounding adult characters, ranging from wide-eyed excitement to narrowed, self-satisfied smiles when she believes a plan is succeeding.

Anya is a telepath capable of perceiving the thoughts of people and animals around her. The official anime description identifies her as an esper accidentally created through experiments conducted by an unspecified organization. Her ability allows her to discover Loid's occupation, Yor's assassination work and Bond's precognition despite all three secrets being concealed from the rest of the household.

Telepathy operates without requiring physical contact. Anya can hear surface thoughts from nearby individuals and can intentionally focus on particular people, although she does not have perfect control over what she receives. Crowds are especially difficult because many overlapping minds produce an overwhelming mass of information. Large gatherings can leave her distressed or physically uncomfortable.

Her power also has a recurring limitation connected to the lunar cycle. During the new moon—an occurrence Anya privately calls an "eclipsing" period—she temporarily loses access to telepathy. Because she normally conceals her ability, she cannot easily explain why her performance or behavior changes during these periods.

Telepathy gives her a significant advantage in situations involving hidden intentions, but it is not equivalent to intelligence or education. She frequently understands the literal contents of someone's mind without recognizing the broader meaning. Reading classmates' answers during examinations is likewise unreliable: she may copy incorrect thoughts, attract suspicion if her performance changes too drastically, or find herself unable to access the information she needs.

Anya has no formal combat training comparable with the adult members of her family. Yor nevertheless teaches her a basic striking motion for self-defense, and Anya is able to deliver a surprisingly effective punch against Damian during her first days at Eden. Her most useful physical traits are instead quick reactions, persistence and the ability to act on information that other characters do not possess.

Her combination with Bond is particularly effective. By reading Bond's mind, Anya can see the future images produced by his precognition. She can then attempt to alter the predicted outcome, effectively allowing the pair to recognize threats before they occur. Because neither can openly explain their powers, however, Anya must frequently invent indirect ways to guide Loid or other adults toward the problem.

Loid Forger is Anya's adoptive father and the person around whom much of her early emotional security develops. Anya learns almost immediately that he is Twilight by reading his thoughts, but Loid believes she is an ordinary child. She is fascinated by his espionage work and initially views many of his dangerous assignments through the framework of the spy cartoons she enjoys. More importantly, she recognizes that Operation Strix is the reason he adopted her, producing a persistent fear that failure could end their family. As their relationship develops, she increasingly seeks his praise for reasons extending beyond the mission itself.

Yor Forger becomes Anya's adoptive mother when Loid needs a wife to complete the appearance of a conventional household. Anya quickly discovers Yor's identity as an assassin and is thrilled by the combination of a spy father and assassin mother. Unlike many people who would be frightened by Yor's violent thoughts, Anya generally regards her abilities with admiration. She also responds strongly to Yor's warmth and protectiveness, and their relationship develops into an increasingly genuine mother-daughter bond.

Bond Forger is Anya's pet and one of the few beings whose supernatural ability she fully understands. Telepathy allows Anya to perceive the future images Bond sees, enabling the two to communicate in a way that remains inaccessible to the rest of the family. Their relationship combines ordinary affection between a child and her dog with a functional partnership in dangerous situations. Anya names him after Bondman, the protagonist of her favorite spy program.

Damian Desmond is Anya's classmate and the younger son of Operation Strix's target, Donovan Desmond. Loid needs Anya to become close enough to Damian that the Forger and Desmond families might meet socially, leading Anya to identify him as "Second Son" and repeatedly attempt to befriend him. Their relationship begins disastrously when Anya punches him after enduring insults from his group. Damian subsequently develops complicated feelings toward her, which Anya fails to interpret correctly even when telepathy exposes thoughts that might otherwise make them obvious.

Becky Blackbell becomes Anya's closest friend at Eden. Becky initially approaches her after witnessing the conflict with Damian and remains supportive even when other students distance themselves. Their friendship gives Anya a relationship largely separate from espionage objectives. Becky often tries to instruct her in romance, fashion and social behavior, while Anya's limited understanding of those subjects produces very different interpretations of the advice.

Emile Elman and Ewen Egeburg are Damian's closest school friends and frequently participate in his clashes with Anya. Because Anya's primary interest in their group is reaching Damian, she often treats Emile and Ewen as obstacles or extensions of his social circle rather than independent targets for friendship. Their attitudes soften somewhat as shared school experiences force the children to cooperate.

Henry Henderson is one of the Eden educators most directly involved in Anya's school career. His obsession with "elegance" initially makes the Forger family's admissions interview particularly demanding, but he also recognizes sincere conduct and courage. Anya's unpredictable combination of poor academics, dramatic behavior and occasional moral bravery repeatedly places her at the center of situations Henderson must evaluate.

Donovan Desmond is not personally close to Anya, but his position determines much of her school life. She understands from Loid's thoughts that getting close to Donovan is the purpose of Operation Strix and that Damian offers the most obvious path toward him. Her knowledge of Donovan himself remains limited, making him less a personal enemy in her eyes than the distant objective behind her father's "mission."

Yuri Briar is Yor's younger brother and therefore Anya's adoptive uncle. Anya's telepathy exposes his intense attachment to Yor and his hostility toward Loid, producing considerable discomfort whenever his thoughts become excessive. She is also aware of information about Yuri that other members of the household do not share, forcing her once again to navigate adult secrets she cannot openly acknowledge.

Franky Franklin frequently assists Loid and becomes a familiar adult in Anya's life. He sometimes babysits her or participates in elaborate attempts to entertain or motivate her. Anya generally treats him casually and can be demanding, but she is comfortable enough around him to include him within the broader circle surrounding the Forger household.

Sylvia Sherwood is one of Loid's intelligence superiors and encounters Anya during incidents connected to WISE operations. Although Anya does not understand the full structure of the organization, telepathy gives her glimpses of Sylvia's authority and concerns. Sylvia, meanwhile, generally interacts with Anya through the cover identities required by Loid's mission rather than as an operative revealing her true role.

Melinda Desmond enters Anya's orbit indirectly through Yor's connection with the Desmond family. Anya's ability makes encounters involving Melinda unusually unsettling because surface behavior does not always align neatly with the thoughts she perceives. The experience reinforces a recurring limitation of Anya's power: hearing thoughts can create new questions rather than provide simple explanations.

Anya enters the story when Twilight receives Operation Strix and realizes that approaching Donovan Desmond requires him to create a family almost immediately. At an orphanage, he encounters Anya and attempts to assess whether she can pass Eden Academy's entrance requirements. By reading his mind, she anticipates what he wants from her and manipulates the situation just enough to be adopted.

Her kidnapping soon afterward gives Loid reason to reconsider the arrangement, but Anya's determination to remain with him prevents the partnership from ending. Once Yor joins the household, Anya becomes the only member of the initial family who understands the central deception in full: Loid believes Yor is an ordinary city employee, Yor believes Loid is an ordinary psychiatrist, and both believe Anya is an ordinary child.

Eden Academy turns Anya into one of the primary drivers of Operation Strix. Loid's preferred route requires her to earn eight Stella Stars and become an Imperial Scholar, granting access to prestigious gatherings attended by Donovan. A secondary route—Plan B—depends on Anya befriending Damian. Her academic difficulties make the first route uncertain, while her chaotic relationship with Damian complicates the second.

Anya nevertheless earns recognition through acts that have little to do with conventional academic excellence. Her first major Stella comes after she senses that a child is drowning and intervenes, accepting considerable personal risk to help. Other school incidents repeatedly show the same pattern: information obtained from telepathy places her in a position to act, but she must do so without revealing why she knows something is wrong.

Season 3 of the anime extends this aspect of her role through the Eden Academy bus hijacking storyline, in which Anya and her classmates are placed directly in danger. The official anime's third season covers Missions 38 through 50, including the Red Circus incident and its aftermath. Her ability to hear both classmates and captors gives her unusual awareness of the crisis, but she still has to communicate that knowledge through the behavior of a frightened young student rather than an openly acknowledged esper.

Anya initially approaches the Forger household primarily through the fear of losing it. She knows why Loid adopted her, understands that he needs success at Eden and repeatedly interprets setbacks as potential reasons for him to send her away. Her previous failed adoptions make that anxiety credible even when Loid has no intention of acting as harshly as she imagines.

Over time, her attachment becomes less transactional. Loid is still "Papa" the spy whose mission must be protected, but Anya increasingly cares about his happiness independently of Operation Strix. The same occurs with Yor: what begins as excitement over acquiring an assassin mother develops into ordinary reliance on Yor for reassurance, protection and affection.

Her school development is deliberately uneven. She does not transform into an academic prodigy simply because the mission requires it. She continues to struggle with studying, attempts shortcuts and occasionally receives Tonitrus Bolts for misconduct. At the same time, repeated experiences at Eden make her more capable of understanding other children as people rather than merely components of Loid's plans.

Her relationship with Damian is an important example. She originally pursues him because Loid's thoughts identify friendship with Damian as Plan B. Their early conflict makes that objective difficult, and Anya frequently finds Damian irritating. Continued interaction nevertheless produces moments in which she responds to his emotions rather than merely his usefulness to Operation Strix, even though both children remain poor at expressing themselves directly.

The Red Circus crisis marks another stage in her development. Trapped in a dangerous situation with classmates, Anya cannot simply rely on Loid or Yor to solve the immediate problem. She experiences genuine fear but also uses her unusual access to information to understand the people around her, control her reactions and help prevent panic. The official anime adaptation reached this storyline during Season 3 in 2025.

Anya's given name is written アーニャ (Ānya) in Japanese. "Anya" is a common transliteration of Аня, a Russian diminutive of Anna, although the manga has not established a specific in-universe national or linguistic origin for her name. Because the setting combines fictional European countries and naming traditions, assigning her a precise real-world ethnicity from the name alone would go beyond established canon.

Her surname comes from Loid's constructed identity as Loid Forger. The English word "forger" refers to someone who creates falsified documents or identities, making the family name particularly appropriate for a household built around fabricated relationships and cover stories.

Anya's name was rendered "Ania" on an early doorplate in the manga before later appearing as "Anya." A later extra explains within the story that Anya herself created the original plate and rewrote it after Loid corrected the spelling.

Her experimental designation, Subject 007, also evokes the numerical codenames associated with spy fiction. The story does not establish a direct canonical connection between the number and any particular real-world fictional spy, however, so the resemblance is best treated as an allusion rather than confirmed in-universe information.

• Anya's height at the time she enters Eden Academy is officially given as 99.5 cm. Loid independently judges her to look approximately four or five years old despite her claim that she is six.

• She is the only core member of the Forger household who knows the secrets of the other members: Loid is a spy, Yor is an assassin and Bond can see the future. The official anime character profile explicitly describes her awareness of all three.

• Anya's favorite food is peanuts, and her enthusiasm for them became one of the character's recurring visual and verbal motifs.

• Her favorite television program is Spy Wars, an in-universe spy series starring Bondman. She later names Bond after its protagonist.

• Anya's telepathy cannot be used normally during a new moon. She refers to the period in her own terminology and tries to conceal the limitation from everyone around her.

• Her original room sign read "ANIA." A later extra establishes that Anya made the sign herself and changed it to "ANYA" after Loid pointed out the spelling.

• Tatsuya Endo's design for Anya drew on the protagonist of his earlier one-shot Rengoku no Ashe. Her telepathy was decided relatively early during development of the series.

• Although Anya often tries to exploit telepathy for schoolwork, the ability does not make her academically gifted. The thoughts she reads may be incorrect, overwhelming or unavailable, and she still has to understand whatever information she receives.

Anya is one of the principal characters of the television anime adaptation of SPY x FAMILY. Atsumi Tanezaki voices her in Japanese, while Megan Shipman is her primary English-language voice actor. The official Japanese anime site lists Tanezaki alongside the character and describes Anya as the Forger family's daughter, an Eden first-year and a telepath created through experimentation.

The anime adapts Anya's exaggerated internal reactions and facial expressions extensively, while also expanding some domestic and school sequences through animation-specific timing and visual comedy. She remains one of the central viewpoint characters across the television adaptation's first three seasons. Season 3 aired in 2025 and encompasses Missions 38–50.

Anya also appears as a central character in the original theatrical feature SPY x FAMILY CODE: White. The film uses the Forger family's established dynamic in an anime-original mission built around a family trip and a school-related objective rather than directly adapting a manga storyline.

She appears in SPY x FAMILY: Family Portrait, the prose-story collection written by Aya Yajima and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. One of its stories follows Anya during an Eden Academy camping trip as she continues trying to improve her relationship with Damian, while other stories place her within additional Forger-family situations not presented as regular manga chapters. VIZ describes the book as a collection of original prose stories centered on the Forgers and their associates.

Anya is also playable in SPY×ANYA: Operation Memories, a game centered on her school assignment to create a photo diary. The premise places everyday activities with Loid, Yor, Bond and her classmates at the center rather than treating Anya as a conventional combat-oriented character.

Stage versions of Anya have been performed by multiple child actresses in the Japanese musical adaptation of SPY×FAMILY. Because of the demands of the production and the age of the role, several performers were cast to alternate as Anya rather than assigning the part to a single child actor.

Anya rapidly became one of the most publicly recognizable figures associated with SPY×FAMILY. Her facial expressions, telepathic reactions and enthusiasm for peanuts became recurring elements of promotional material and merchandise, while official campaigns have frequently used Anya independently of the rest of the cast. The official anime site has distributed Anya-focused artwork, character goods and social-media icons across multiple seasons.

At the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Anya won both Best Supporting Character and the "Must Protect at All Costs" Character category. Her Japanese performer, Atsumi Tanezaki, was also nominated for her portrayal, while performances of Anya in other dubbed languages received recognition in the awards' voice-acting categories.

Anya's popularity extended beyond anime-specific awards. A Japanese Generation Z trends survey for 2022 placed SPY×FAMILY among the year's major trends and ranked Anya herself prominently among subjects associated with that popularity. Her distinctive dialogue and expressions also spread widely through memes, short-form video and other social-media formats.

The character has additionally been used as the focus of dedicated merchandise concepts, including an Anya-themed Tamagotchi, and has frequently appeared as the visual centerpiece of collaborations and promotional campaigns. Her importance to the franchise's public identity is reflected in the scale of official goods and events built around her likeness rather than only the Forger family as a group.

The wider series had exceeded 35 million copies in circulation by its fifth-anniversary campaign, following early recognition that included first place in the Web Manga category of the 2019 Next Manga Awards and first place in the male-reader edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2020. Although these are awards for SPY×FAMILY rather than Anya individually, she has been one of the principal characters used throughout the franchise's expansion from manga into anime, film, games, stage productions and consumer merchandise.
