Murdoch Swan

Swan is arrogant, spiteful, insecure, and willing to abuse institutional authority for personal satisfaction. His position at Eden gives him influence over applicants, and he uses that influence far less responsibly than the other housemasters present during the Forger interview.

His hostility toward families is tied directly to his private life. A month before the admissions interview, Swan's wife filed for divorce and received full custody of their daughter. Seeing affectionate parents and children consequently aggravates him, and he tries to undermine them through humiliating questions.

Swan is also class-conscious and sexist. He criticizes Yor for not being the family's primary cook and treats domestic roles as standards by which applicants should be judged. His conduct sharply contrasts with Henry Henderson's belief that Eden should cultivate dignity and character.

Swan has no supernatural powers or combat abilities. His influence comes from his position within Eden Academy and his authority over admissions and students.

As Cline Hall's housemaster and an economics teacher, he has access to one of Ostania's most prestigious educational institutions. His father's former position as headmaster also gives him a family connection to Eden's upper administration.

Swan later demonstrates that he is willing to exploit that access for corruption. He becomes involved in an illegal admissions arrangement in which parents provide payments in exchange for favorable treatment, using faculty connections to manipulate Eden's systems.

Swan serves as the principal obstacle during the Forger family's admissions interview. He repeatedly asks provocative questions intended to make applicants uncomfortable, culminating in a demand that Anya compare Yor with the mother she had before being adopted.

Anya begins crying, and Loid nearly strikes Swan before stopping himself. Henderson, however, is unable to tolerate Swan's conduct and punches him, risking his own career to defend the family.

The interview nevertheless proves decisive for the Forgers because Henderson and Walter Evans recognize their strengths despite Swan's behavior.

Much later, Swan becomes central to an internal Eden scandal involving corrupt admissions and an attempt to frame Henderson. Evidence exposes Swan's role in a payment scheme linked to parents seeking preferential access to the academy.

Henry Henderson is Swan's fellow housemaster and ideological opposite during the Forger interview. Henderson ultimately punches Swan after his cruelty toward Anya.

Walter Evans sits alongside Swan and Henderson during the admissions interview and evaluates the Forgers far more professionally.

Anya Forger becomes the target of Swan's most deliberately hurtful interview question.
