Bond's early life was spent as an experimental animal under Project Apple, a research initiative pursued by the former Ostanian government. The project's stated objective was to create highly intelligent animals that could serve military purposes. The treatment he received left lasting psychological effects. Official character information places his height at the withers at just under one meter, making him large enough for Anya to ride on his back for short periods. Although commonly compared with a Great Pyrenees because of his size and appearance, the manga itself primarily presents him simply as a large white dog rather than making his breed an important piece of characterization. His visual design prioritizes his enormous, soft appearance and the contrast between that appearance and his hesitant temperament.

Bond possesses precognition, allowing him to see brief images of events that have not yet happened. The visions generally appear as fragments rather than complete explanations of the future. Franky's interactions with him are largely domestic rather than operational, reinforcing Bond's transition from military research subject to ordinary family pet.

Sylvia Sherwood becomes directly involved in determining what happens to Bond after the terrorist incident. As a senior WISE operative, she understands that the dogs used in the plot originated from Project Apple and therefore recognizes the potential intelligence value and danger surrounding them. Rather than removing Bond permanently from Anya, however, the circumstances ultimately allow him to remain with the Forger household.

Keith Kepler is associated with one of the most dangerous periods of Bond's life after Project Apple. Keith's terrorist group acquires trained dogs and plans to use explosives attached to them in an assassination operation. Bond is treated as a disposable component of that plan, echoing the way earlier researchers had valued him primarily for his usefulness rather than as a living animal.

Bond also interacts with other dogs encountered through the Forgers' daily life, though none shares the same relationship he has with Anya. He is identified by a number and evaluated according to whether he can satisfy the demands of the people experimenting on him. That history makes his eventual adoption more significant than a simple change of ownership.

Bond receives his name from Anya after joining the Forger household. She names him after Bondman, the fictional secret agent who stars in her favorite television program, Spy Wars. Her choice reflects both her fascination with espionage and the immediate association she makes between the dog's appearance and the heroic world she admires.

"Bond" also carries an obvious association with the James Bond franchise, whose title character is one of the most recognizable fictional spies in popular culture. Given the espionage framework of SPY x FAMILY and Anya's fixation on fictional spies, the reference fits the series' broader use of Cold War and spy-fiction imagery, although the in-story explanation remains specifically Bondman.

His surname comes from the Forger family after his adoption. "Forger" is the cover surname used by Loid while constructing the household required for Operation Strix. Bond therefore acquires the same fabricated family name as Loid, Yor and Anya despite being the only member to enter the household as a pet.

A VIZ reader poll conducted in 2022 asked fans which of the Forger family's secret powers they would most like to possess. Bond's clairvoyance received 10 percent of the vote, behind Anya's telepathy, Loid's spy abilities and Yor's assassination skills. Although the poll measured preferences for abilities rather than character popularity directly, it reflects how quickly Bond's precognition became recognized as one of the household's defining traits.

His prominence in official merchandise has been helped by a design well suited to plush toys and character goods: large proportions, white fur, black paws and a simple facial structure. Promotional campaigns frequently pair him with Anya, mirroring their unusually close relationship in the story.
