Melinda Desmond

Melinda is graceful, sociable, energetic, and much less overtly formal than her political status might suggest. When she meets Yor, she initially withholds her identity because she wants their interaction to develop without the burden of the Desmond name.

She enjoys sports and social activities with the Lady Patriots Society and treats the women in her circle warmly. Yor's extraordinary physical ability during volleyball impresses her immediately, but Melinda also encourages Yor to cooperate with teammates rather than relying only on individual strength.

Her behavior changes dramatically when Damian is discussed. Melinda can express sincere maternal concern in one moment and intense aversion in another, leaving even telepathic Anya disturbed by the contradiction. The manga presents these conflicting feelings as evidence of severe strain within the Desmond household rather than providing a simple explanation for them.

Later chapters expand Melinda's private life beyond her role as Donovan's wife. She covertly practices fortune-telling under the name Lunaluna☽Selena, using disguises to keep the activity separate from the Desmond family's public image.

Melinda has no known supernatural powers. She is, however, physically active and notably athletic for a civilian, participating enthusiastically in sports with the Lady Patriots Society.

Her greatest influence comes from social and political status. As Donovan Desmond's wife and a former First Lady, she belongs to one of Ostania's most prominent families and has access to elite social circles that are normally inaccessible to ordinary citizens.

The Lady Patriots Society gives Melinda an additional network independent of her husband. The group includes wealthy and influential women from Berlint, making Melinda potentially useful to Operation Strix even though she herself is not shown controlling national policy.

Her covert fortune-teller identity also demonstrates considerable skill at disguise, concealment, and managing a separate social persona, though these are civilian practices rather than espionage training.

Melinda enters the story when Yor helps her after a chance encounter. Impressed by Yor, she brings her to a Lady Patriots Society volleyball game and later invites her to continue socializing with the group.

The friendship immediately attracts WISE's attention because Melinda provides a possible alternate route toward Donovan. Loid must decide whether Yor's new connection can assist Operation Strix without creating suspicion or placing the family in additional danger.

Melinda's relationship with Damian also becomes important when Anya attempts to understand the Desmond household. The emotional contradiction Anya perceives complicates the assumption that Damian's family dynamics can be understood purely through Donovan's distance.

Later interactions with Yor, Loid, Millie, and other civilians reveal that Melinda maintains parts of her life largely outside Donovan's direct sphere. Her strained family relationships and secret interests suggest a much more isolated position within the Desmond household than her public status implies.

Donovan Desmond is Melinda's husband and the former Prime Minister of Ostania. Their marriage is visibly strained, and Melinda maintains considerable emotional and social distance from him.

Demetrius Desmond is Melinda's elder son. The family is distant enough that little direct interaction between them is shown.

Damian Desmond is Melinda's younger son. Her feelings toward him fluctuate between genuine maternal concern and disturbing hostility.

Yor Forger becomes Melinda's friend after a chance meeting and is invited into the Lady Patriots Society.

Loid Forger becomes relevant to Melinda through Yor and through the Desmond family's connection to Operation Strix, although Melinda does not know his true occupation.

Anya Forger encounters Melinda through Damian and uses telepathy to perceive the contradictory emotions Melinda directs toward her son.

Millie Myers confronts Melinda over the war that killed Millie's father; Melinda responds with sympathy rather than hostility, helping defuse the confrontation.
