Inside this volume
Twelve years before the story opens, the Village Hidden in the Leaves was devastated by a nine-tailed fox spirit, an attack that claimed the life of the village's leader, the Hokage, along with countless others. The village has long since returned to peace. Living in it is Naruto Uzumaki, a loud, prank-obsessed boy who is struggling to graduate from the Ninja Academy and who insists that he will one day be named Hokage himself — though the destiny waiting for him turns out to be far more complicated than the title he is chasing.Twelve years ago the Village Hidden in the Leaves was attacked by a fearsome threat, and today a troublemaking kid named Naruto struggles to graduate from Ninja Academy with the goal of becoming the next Hokage
As the opening volume of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto, it lays down the foundations of the series: the hidden-village system, the ranks and techniques of the shinobi world, and the loneliness that drives its protagonist. It closes with the formation of the three-man squad that the rest of the series is built around, and their first test under a new instructor.
The volume opens on the aftermath of a catastrophe: a nine-tailed fox spirit once tore through the Village Hidden in the Leaves and was stopped only at enormous cost. Twelve years later, the orphan Naruto Uzumaki is the village's most persistent nuisance, defacing monuments and disrupting classes at the Ninja Academy, largely because negative attention is the only kind he receives. After failing his graduation exam yet again, he is manipulated by the instructor Mizuki into stealing a forbidden scroll from the village archives — a scheme that ends with Naruto learning a difficult technique in a single night, and learning something far more consequential about himself.
Now a ninja in training, Naruto is sorted into a three-man squad alongside Sakura Haruno, the classmate he has a crush on, and Sasuke Uchiha, the top student he regards as his rival. Their assigned instructor, the perpetually late Kakashi Hatake, is unimpressed by all three and sets them a survival exercise with only two bells at stake, warning that whoever fails will be sent back to the Academy.
Each of the three approaches the test alone and is comprehensively outmatched. The volume ends with Kakashi's verdict on their performance, delivered as a judgment none of them expected.
