Iruka Umino

Iruka is compassionate, responsible, and patient, although Naruto frequently tests that patience through pranks and classroom disruption. He believes discipline matters but does not confuse punishment with rejection.

His empathy for Naruto grows from painful experience. Iruka also behaved badly as a child after losing his parents, using jokes and misbehavior to attract attention from people who otherwise seemed not to notice his grief.

The Nine-Tails creates an emotional conflict for him because the attack killed his parents, yet Iruka consciously distinguishes Naruto from the creature sealed inside him.

That distinction becomes one of the earliest moral decisions in the series. Rather than inherit the village's resentment, Iruka recognizes Naruto's loneliness and responds to the boy rather than the tailed beast.

Iruka is a competent chūnin with the broad fundamentals expected of an Academy instructor. He can use ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu fundamentals, transformation, clones, substitution, and standard shinobi weapons.

His most important professional strength is instruction. Iruka teaches foundational techniques and evaluates whether Academy students possess the basic competence necessary to become genin.

He also uses barrier and restraint techniques in later appearances, though he is not presented as an elite front-line combatant comparable to Konoha's senior jōnin.

Iruka's courage is more significant to his role than exceptional destructive power. He willingly places himself between students and dangerous enemies despite understanding the difference in strength.

Iruka is central to Naruto's opening chapter. Naruto fails the graduation examination and is manipulated by Mizuki into stealing the Scroll of Seals.

Mizuki reveals the secret of the Nine-Tails to Naruto and attempts to convince him that Iruka secretly hates him for the attack that killed his parents.

Iruka instead shields Naruto from Mizuki's attack and openly acknowledges Naruto as his student. Naruto overhears him and realizes that someone in the village genuinely sees him as himself.

After Naruto defeats Mizuki with the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, Iruka gives Naruto his own forehead protector and officially recognizes his graduation.

Iruka remains a recurring source of emotional stability as Naruto grows. He worries about dangerous missions and frequently occupies a position closer to family than instructor.

Before the Fourth Shinobi World War, Iruka is among those assigned to keep Naruto isolated from information about the conflict. When Naruto realizes what is happening, Iruka cannot stop him but entrusts him with a message affirming his belief in him.

Naruto Uzumaki is Iruka's most important student and eventually resembles family to him. Iruka's decision to acknowledge Naruto Uzumaki in the opening chapter becomes one of the foundations of Naruto's emotional development.

Mizuki is Iruka's fellow Academy instructor at the beginning of the series. Mizuki's manipulation of Naruto forces Iruka to confront his own lingering pain over the Nine-Tails directly.

Hiruzen Sarutobi understands both Iruka's childhood grief and Naruto's isolation and encourages Iruka to recognize the similarities between them.

Iruka's Father and Iruka's Mother are killed during the Nine-Tails' attack, leaving Iruka orphaned as a child.

Kakashi Hatake becomes Naruto's jōnin teacher after graduation, while Iruka remains an important personal figure outside Team 7.
