Zeff

Zeff is abrasive, demanding and deeply compassionate beneath his insults. He enforces strict kitchen standards, expects cooks to defend their workplace and frequently communicates affection through criticism rather than open tenderness.

Hunger is the one form of suffering he refuses to ignore. His experience on the barren rock convinces him that feeding a starving person takes priority over judging whether that person is a customer, criminal or enemy.

Zeff holds cooking and combat to separate codes. Because a cook’s hands are essential tools, he fights only with his legs and teaches Sanji to do the same. He also insists that no one waste food or demean the labor involved in preparing it.

In his pirate career, Zeff was a formidable martial artist specializing in kicks. His strength was said to shatter rock and leave footprints in steel. He reportedly completed a year-long voyage on the Grand Line and returned with a valuable logbook.

The loss of his right leg ends his former combat style, but Zeff remains physically powerful in old age. He can strike unruly cooks across the restaurant and defend himself using his wooden leg.

Zeff is an accomplished chef and teacher. He instructs Sanji in professional cooking, kitchen management and kicking techniques, providing the foundation for both of Sanji’s principal roles aboard the Straw Hat crew.

As owner and head chef, Zeff commands the Baratie’s combative staff and operates the restaurant in waters regularly visited by pirates. His authority rests on culinary expertise as much as physical strength.

Zeff meets Sanji when the Cook Pirates attack the Orbit, the passenger ship on which Sanji works as an apprentice cook. A storm destroys both vessels after Sanji attempts to defend his dream of finding the All Blue.

Zeff rescues Sanji and reaches a barren rock with two bags. He gives Sanji the small bag of food and keeps a larger bag that appears to contain provisions; in the manga, the second bag contains treasure, and Zeff survives by eating his own severed leg.

After their rescue, Zeff uses his treasure to establish the Baratie. Years later, Don Krieg attacks the restaurant and demands Zeff’s Grand Line logbook. Zeff refuses to surrender either the restaurant or his beliefs about feeding the hungry.

Zeff recognizes that Sanji will never leave while he feels indebted to the Baratie. He and the cooks therefore drive Sanji away with feigned insults, allowing him to join Luffy and pursue the All Blue.

Sanji is Zeff’s adopted son, student and culinary heir. Their relationship begins in conflict but becomes a profound parental bond built through starvation, work and shared belief in the All Blue.

Patty and Carne are senior cooks at the Baratie. They follow Zeff’s standards, help defend the restaurant and participate in the effort to make Sanji leave without guilt.

Monkey D. Luffy earns Zeff’s approval by defending the Baratie and recognizing Sanji’s need to pursue his dream. Zeff entrusts Sanji’s future to the pirate crew without demanding repayment.

Don Krieg targets Zeff for his knowledge of the Grand Line, while Gin becomes evidence for Zeff and Sanji’s belief that a starving person must be fed even when doing so carries danger.

Vinsmoke Judge later uses Zeff’s life as leverage to force Sanji into marriage. Judge is Sanji’s biological father, but Zeff is the parent whose teachings Sanji accepts as his own.
