Yukari Nishida

Yukari is outspoken and frequently irritable, particularly with her younger brother. Her complaints do not prevent her from helping him, however, and she puts her design skills to practical use when Mizusawa needs club clothing.

She has a conspicuous preference for men with narrow-looking eyes. That attraction becomes a recurring source of comedy in her limited appearances and directly affects whom she supports during school karuta matches.

Yukari is unapologetic about her romantic priorities. The fact that Yusei is family does not guarantee that she will cheer for Mizusawa when his team is playing against someone she likes.

Yukari is skilled at designing T-shirts and contributes customized clothing to the Mizusawa Karuta Club.

She is not established as a competitive karuta player herself. Her involvement in the sport comes through her brother, her relationship with a Hokuo player and the practical help she provides to Mizusawa.

Yukari becomes connected to Mizusawa through Yusei and the club's need for team shirts. Her contribution gives the players another shared visual identity as the club becomes increasingly established.

Her relationship with Retro subsequently creates a personal connection between families and players on opposite sides of the Mizusawa-Hokuo rivalry.

Although Yukari remains outside the competitive lineup, her appearances provide a domestic perspective on Yusei and add another comic complication to matches between the two Tokyo schools.

Yusei Nishida is Yukari's younger brother. Yukari helps Yusei Nishida's Mizusawa club with its shirts but has no hesitation about supporting an opposing player when romance is involved.

Hiro Kinashi becomes Yukari's boyfriend. Yukari openly cheers for Hiro Kinashi when Hokuo faces Mizusawa, even though her brother is playing for the opposing team.

Tsutomu Komano briefly attracts Yukari's attention because of his appearance with glasses. Her interest in Tsutomu Komano disappears after seeing him without them.
