Ben Beckman

Beckman is composed and analytical. He rarely joins the crew’s louder displays without first assessing the situation, and his measured behavior contrasts with the exuberance of Shanks, Lucky Roux and other officers.

He can be stern when necessary. In Foosha Village, Beckman explains to Luffy that the sea is too dangerous for a child, framing the warning in practical terms rather than indulging Luffy’s excitement.

His loyalty to Shanks does not prevent candid advice. Their relationship operates less like that of a distant captain and subordinate than a partnership between two experienced pirates with different temperaments.

Beckman’s primary weapon is a rifle, which he can also use as a close-range club. During the confrontation with Higuma’s bandits, he defeats several armed men using the weapon without needing to fire it.

At Marineford, Beckman aims his rifle at Borsalino, prompting the admiral to pause and acknowledge the threat before later resuming his attack. The exchange demonstrates Beckman’s reputation and presence but does not establish that he defeated or physically restrained Borsalino.

Supplementary canon identifies Beckman as exceptionally intelligent and a powerful combatant whose ability is comparable enough to Shanks’s to inspire fear throughout the New World. The exact nature and limits of his Haki have not been fully demonstrated in the manga, and no named techniques have been revealed.

Beckman debuts during Luffy’s childhood in Foosha Village. He participates when the Red Hair Pirates defeat Higuma’s bandits and witnesses the events that lead Shanks to entrust his straw hat to Luffy.

Years later, Beckman accompanies the crew to Marineford. The Red Hair Pirates’ arrival ends further escalation of the Summit War, with Beckman taking position aboard a Marine ship and confronting Borsalino while Shanks addresses the battlefield.

He later appears with the crew as world events intensify around Luffy’s rise. At Wano’s coast, the Red Hair Pirates discuss Luffy and Bartolomeo before Shanks decides not to seek an immediate reunion. Beckman also participates in the crew’s movements around Elbaf during its confrontation with the Kid Pirates.

Shanks is Beckman’s captain and closest established associate. Beckman serves as his first mate, adviser and battlefield counterpart. Shanks trusts him with authority over the crew, while Beckman speaks to him without the formality expected in a rigid hierarchy.

Luffy knows Beckman from the Red Hair Pirates’ time in Foosha Village. Beckman treats him kindly but refuses to romanticize the risks of piracy, reinforcing the lesson that joining a crew requires more than enthusiasm.

Lucky Roux and Yasopp are Beckman’s fellow senior officers. The four men form the most prominently featured leadership group within the Red Hair Pirates, with Beckman generally occupying the restrained role in contrast to their more expressive behavior.

Borsalino is the only top-level opponent Beckman has directly challenged on-panel in the main story, though their Marineford exchange remains brief. Eustass Kid previously lost an arm in conflict with the Red Hair Pirates, and supplementary canon identifies Beckman as the crew member responsible, making him a personal enemy of Kid’s crew.
