Personality
Personality
Ichinokura is disciplined, stubborn and exceptionally proud of his endurance. He treats the ability to withstand discomfort as an important part of his identity, fitting naturally into Sannoh's demanding basketball culture.
Several stories surrounding him establish just how far that stubbornness extends. He is noted for never abandoning Sannoh's severe training camps, even when other members of the team have occasionally tried to escape them. He also defeated members of his school's track team in a marathon.
His tolerance for discomfort reaches an absurd extreme in another anecdote: Ichinokura once continued taking an examination despite severe abdominal pain that proved to be appendicitis. These examples explain why Domoto considers him the appropriate defender for a battle of stamina against Mitsui.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Ichinokura specializes in man-to-man defense. Rather than seeking steals at every opportunity, he stays tightly attached to his assignment, applies constant pressure and forces his opponent to expend energy simply getting into useful positions.
His outstanding stamina makes this approach particularly effective. Sannoh can ask him to chase an offensive threat for prolonged stretches without worrying that the defensive effort will exhaust him first.
Against Mitsui, the objective is attrition. Ichinokura pressures the Shohoku shooting guard throughout the first half in an attempt to accelerate the fatigue that has historically troubled him. Mitsui remains capable of making three-pointers despite that coverage, but every possession forces him to work.
Ichinokura is also a competent player within Sannoh's highly polished team structure. His selection as a starter against Shohoku demonstrates the trust placed in his defense even though teammates such as Eiji Sawakita, Masashi Kawata and Kazunari Fukatsu receive greater attention for their overall ability.
Story Role
Story Role
Ichinokura appears during Shohoku's second-round Inter-High match against defending national champion Sannoh. Before the game, Sannoh studies recordings of Shohoku and constructs individual strategies for neutralizing its principal players.
Domoto starts Ichinokura specifically against Mitsui. The decision acknowledges that Mitsui's three-point shooting can radically alter a game while also targeting the veteran guard's limited stamina.
Ichinokura's pressure contributes to Mitsui becoming severely fatigued, but it does not eliminate him as a threat. Mitsui continues producing crucial three-pointers even after reaching exhaustion, forcing Sannoh to contend with a scorer who remains dangerous despite the physical toll of Ichinokura's defense.
As Sannoh changes its lineup, Minoru Matsumoto takes a larger role against the exhausted Mitsui. Shohoku ultimately defeats Sannoh 79–78, ending the reigning champion's tournament.
