Goro Domoto

Domoto is composed, professional and thorough. Sannoh's reputation does not lead him to treat Shohoku as irrelevant; he has his players study footage of their opponent and considers the individual threats the underdog roster presents.

He trusts his players without becoming passive. Domoto makes tactical substitutions, changes defensive pressure and assigns specialists when he believes a particular matchup can be exploited.

His demeanor also reflects confidence built on preparation rather than arrogance. He expects Sannoh to win because of its standards and ability, not because the opponent deserves no consideration.

Domoto is an accomplished high-school basketball coach capable of managing an unusually talented roster. One of his greatest weapons is Sannoh's coordinated full-court press, which combines individual defensive ability with precise trapping and rotation.

He also uses personnel intelligently. Players such as Satoshi Ichinokura, Masahiro Nobe, Minoru Matsumoto and Mikio Kawata offer different tactical tools, allowing Domoto to change matchups without sacrificing Sannoh's overall quality.

Managing elite players presents its own challenge, but Domoto gives Sawakita room to attack individually while maintaining a structured team around him.

Domoto is Shohoku coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai's counterpart during the national tournament's defining game. Sannoh enters as the overwhelming favorite, and Domoto's preparations emphasize that the champions are not relying solely on reputation.

His decision to unleash Sannoh's full-court press creates one of the most severe crises Shohoku faces. The coordinated pressure overwhelms Shohoku temporarily and produces a rapid scoring run.

As Shohoku recovers, Domoto continues adjusting his lineup and assignments, but the game becomes increasingly unpredictable as Sakuragi, Rukawa, Mitsui and the others exceed expectations. Shohoku ultimately wins by one point.

After the defeat, Domoto tells his devastated players that the experience of losing will become valuable to them. Rather than condemning them for ending Sannoh's championship run, he frames the loss as an experience their previous dominance could never provide.

Eiji Sawakita is Domoto's ace and the country's leading individual high-school player.

Kazunari Fukatsu is Domoto's captain and on-court organizer, carrying out Sannoh's tactical plans from point guard.

Masashi Kawata gives Domoto an unusually versatile center capable of dominating several different matchups.
