Personality
Personality
Mitsui is proud, emotional, competitive, and far more vulnerable than his delinquent appearance initially suggests. As a successful junior-high player, he develops enormous confidence in his basketball ability and places tremendous importance on the recognition he receives from Coach Anzai.
His injury devastates him because basketball is central to his sense of self. Watching Takenori Akagi continue improving while he remains unable to play intensifies his frustration, and his failed attempt to return before healing properly makes matters worse.
Once back with the team, Mitsui is serious about making up for lost time. His old pride remains, but it is increasingly expressed through endurance and willingness to sacrifice himself for Shohoku rather than through resentment. He understands better than most teammates how easily the opportunity to play can disappear.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Mitsui is an exceptional three-point shooter. His shooting form remains reliable under pressure and gives Shohoku a means of rapidly reducing deficits when opponents concentrate their defense around Akagi and Rukawa. Official character material identifies his precise three-point shooting as his primary weapon.
His junior-high MVP background means he is not merely a stationary shooter. Mitsui possesses strong basketball fundamentals, defensive understanding, passing ability, and tactical awareness. His experience lets him read situations that less polished players might miss.
The principal weakness created by his long absence is stamina. Mitsui frequently reaches physical exhaustion before the end of demanding games, particularly against opponents who force him to work constantly on both ends of the floor. His value does not disappear when tired, however: his shooting technique can remain dangerous even after his legs have begun failing him.
His capacity to produce under extreme fatigue becomes one of his defining competitive traits. Defenders cannot safely abandon him because a single successful three-pointer can restore Shohoku's momentum and trigger another scoring run.
Story Role
Story Role
Mitsui first appears not as a basketball player but as the leader of delinquents who invade Shohoku's gym intending to destroy the basketball team and implicate its members in violence. The confrontation gradually exposes his own history with the sport.
As Takeishi Junior High's MVP, Mitsui had been inspired by Anzai during a championship game and chose Shohoku specifically to play for him. A knee injury during his first year interrupted that plan. Returning prematurely aggravated the injury, and humiliation eventually drove Mitsui away from the team.
His confrontation in the gym reaches its turning point when Anzai appears. Unable to maintain his delinquent façade in front of the coach who inspired him, Mitsui admits that he wants to play basketball again. He cuts his hair, rejoins Shohoku, and becomes the starting shooting guard.
From that point onward, Mitsui's three-point shooting is indispensable through the Kanagawa qualifiers and national tournament. Against Sannoh, he continues hitting critical shots despite extreme exhaustion, helping keep Shohoku within reach when the defending champions threaten to overwhelm them.
Relationships
Relationships
Mitsuyoshi Anzai is the coach who inspired Mitsui as a junior-high player. His encouragement during a seemingly lost game becomes foundational to Mitsui's basketball identity, and seeing him again finally breaks through Mitsui's delinquent persona.
Takenori Akagi entered Shohoku alongside Mitsui. Mitsui initially considered Akagi technically inferior, but Akagi's uninterrupted improvement contrasts painfully with Mitsui's injury and absence. After returning, Mitsui accepts him as captain.
Ryouta Miyagi and Mitsui have a violent history that results in both being hospitalized. They later function effectively as Shohoku's starting backcourt.
Kiminobu Kogure remembers Mitsui from his first year and understands the gap between the talented player he once was and the delinquent he became.
Hanamichi Sakuragi initially encounters Mitsui during the gym attack but later plays beside him in Shohoku's starting five. Kaede Rukawa gives Mitsui another major scoring threat to work alongside.
Tetsuo is Mitsui's friend from his delinquent period. After Mitsui returns to basketball, Tetsuo accepts that decision rather than trying to drag him back into their former life.
