Masashi Kawata

Kawata is confident, perceptive and comfortable teasing his teammates. Unlike players who need to advertise their ability, he behaves with the assurance of someone accustomed to proving himself through play.

He studies opponents carefully and does not dismiss genuine talent. His assessment of Shohoku becomes increasingly serious as he sees its players producing results that contradict Sannoh's initial expectations.

Kawata can be hard on his younger brother, but the severity comes from understanding how much development the inexperienced giant still needs. His humor and relaxed manner disappear when a possession demands complete concentration.

Kawata is an exceptionally complete center. His power, rebounding and interior scoring are already elite, but his earlier years at smaller positions gave him ball handling, shooting range, footwork and mobility uncommon among high-school big men.

His growth history is central to his versatility. Entering high school at roughly 165 cm, he played on the perimeter before a dramatic growth spurt forced him through different positions. Instead of losing his earlier skills, he carried them into his role at center.

Defensively, Kawata can overpower traditional centers while remaining quick enough to recover against faster opponents. Akagi discovers that neither strength nor established post technique is enough to control him.

Kawata is also one of the few rebounders capable of matching or exceeding Sakuragi around the basket. His positioning, strength and timing complement his technical superiority.

Kawata represents the next level beyond the centers Akagi faced in Kanagawa. Shohoku's captain enters the national tournament with a reputation as one of his prefecture's best big men, only to encounter an opponent who exposes the gap between regional excellence and the country's highest standard.

His presence also complicates Sakuragi's role. Shohoku cannot simply rely on Sakuragi's rebounding dominance when Sannoh possesses both Kawata and Masahiro Nobe.

Akagi eventually accepts that Kawata is presently the superior center rather than allowing pride to consume the rest of his game. That acceptance helps him refocus on what Shohoku needs rather than treating the match solely as a personal duel.

Kawata later recognizes the seriousness of Sakuragi's physical condition and warns him against reckless play, acknowledging that the younger player has a future worth protecting.

Mikio Kawata is Masashi's younger brother. Masashi pushes him hard and criticizes his mistakes, but also takes responsibility for helping the enormous first-year develop.

Takenori Akagi is Kawata's primary positional opponent against Shohoku. Kawata's superiority forces Akagi to reassess his approach to the game.

Hanamichi Sakuragi challenges Kawata as a rebounder and gradually earns his recognition through extraordinary athletic plays.

Eiji Sawakita is Sannoh's ace and a frequent target of Kawata's teasing.

Kazunari Fukatsu is Kawata's captain and point guard, coordinating Sannoh's offense around its numerous scoring options.

Goro Domoto is Kawata's coach and uses his versatility against multiple Shohoku matchups.
