Eiji Sawakita

Sawakita is supremely confident in his basketball ability without maintaining an intimidating personality away from the court. His teammates tease him freely, and his emotional reactions can be surprisingly childish for someone with such a fearsome reputation.

Competition changes his demeanor. Sawakita enjoys opponents who can challenge him and becomes more engaged when someone produces a play he did not expect. Years of dominating players his age have left him hungry for unfamiliar difficulties rather than afraid of them.

His weakness is a tendency toward individualism. Because he can defeat almost any defender one-on-one, Sawakita has less reason than most players to rely on passing. That habit becomes relevant when he encounters an opponent whose own development begins moving in the opposite direction.

Sawakita is an extraordinary isolation scorer. His acceleration, ball control, balance and finishing allow him to beat elite defenders repeatedly, while his touch around the basket includes a high-release runner that can evade even exceptionally athletic shot blockers.

His defensive ability is equally important. He possesses the speed and anticipation to stay in front of elite scorers, making him dangerous at both ends rather than merely Sannoh's primary offensive weapon.

Sawakita's one-on-one superiority becomes clearest against Kaede Rukawa. He initially overwhelms Rukawa, showing that the Shohoku freshman's individual scoring skills have not yet reached the standard of Japan's best high-school player.

His combination of stamina, speed, technique and finishing makes conventional defensive coverage inadequate. Sannoh can isolate him and expect him to create a high-quality shot against almost any matchup.

Sawakita is introduced as the individual benchmark awaiting Shohoku at the national tournament. Sannoh already possesses exceptional players at every position, but Sawakita represents the clearest measure of how far Rukawa still has to develop.

During the Shohoku game, he establishes his superiority in their early one-on-one exchanges. Rukawa's usual methods fail against a player who is faster, more polished and capable of defending him without extensive help.

Rukawa eventually changes the nature of their duel by incorporating passing into his offense. Rather than simply surpassing Sawakita as an isolation scorer, he forces Sawakita and Sannoh to account for the entire Shohoku attack.

Sannoh loses to Shohoku in the closing seconds, giving Sawakita the painful new experience he had effectively wished for when seeking greater challenges. He subsequently prepares to leave for the United States.

Kaede Rukawa becomes Sawakita's principal opponent during the Shohoku-Sannoh game. Their matchup pits two elite isolation scorers against each other and forces Rukawa to reconsider how he uses his talent.

Masashi Kawata is one of Sawakita's senior teammates and regularly teases him despite recognizing his extraordinary ability.

Kazunari Fukatsu captains Sannoh and directs the offense around Sawakita's scoring threat.

Goro Domoto is Sawakita's coach and trusts him as the country's premier high-school ace.

Hanamichi Sakuragi surprises Sawakita with his athleticism and ability to affect plays that appear beyond his reach.

Masahiro Nobe, Minoru Matsumoto and Mikio Kawata are among Sawakita's Sannoh teammates.
