Masahiro Nobe

Nobe is relatively understated compared with Sannoh's more colorful personalities. He approaches his assignment seriously and recognizes strong opponents rather than assuming Sannoh's reputation guarantees victory.

He takes pride in rebounding, the specialized role that earns him a place among the national champions' starters. Sakuragi's attempts to disrupt him can provoke frustration precisely because controlling the boards is the task Nobe expects himself to perform.

His willingness to focus on an unglamorous specialty also reflects Sannoh's team structure. With elite scorers already available, Nobe does not need to chase points to justify his place on the floor.

Nobe is one of the strongest rebound specialists encountered in the series. He uses his 198 cm frame, body strength and sophisticated screen-outs to secure position before the ball reaches the rim.

His boxing-out is exhausting to fight through. When Satoru Kakuta is matched against him, Nobe's physical control of the rebounding area rapidly wears the smaller Shohoku reserve down.

Even Sakuragi initially struggles to escape Nobe's positioning. This is significant because rebounding is the area in which Sakuragi can already compete with experienced elite players despite his limited basketball background.

Nobe starts against Shohoku as Sannoh's rebounding specialist. During the early portions of the match, his screen-outs largely neutralize one of Shohoku's greatest weapons by keeping Sakuragi away from favorable rebounding positions.

His effectiveness reinforces Sannoh's completeness. Shohoku cannot simply focus on Sawakita or Kawata because even the champions' lower-profile starters possess elite specialties.

Sakuragi eventually finds ways to disrupt Nobe's control and uses his exceptional jumping ability to seize rebounds that had previously been unavailable. The shift removes much of Nobe's advantage and contributes to Sannoh changing its lineup.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Nobe's principal rebounding opponent against Shohoku and the player who gives him the most difficulty on the boards.

Masashi Kawata is Nobe's fellow interior player and another elite rebounder. Nobe acknowledges Kawata as one of the rare players capable of defeating him consistently in rebounding contests.

Satoru Kakuta briefly matches up with Nobe and struggles badly against his strength and positioning.

Eiji Sawakita, Kazunari Fukatsu and Minoru Matsumoto are Nobe's teammates in Sannoh's national-championship roster.

Goro Domoto uses Nobe primarily for his rebounding and interior positioning.
