Mitsuyoshi Anzai

Anzai is patient, composed and difficult to provoke. Even Sakuragi's habit of grabbing and jiggling his chin produces little visible anger. His quiet authority nevertheless commands enormous respect from players and rival coaches.

This personality is the opposite of his former coaching style. During his university career, Anzai was notoriously demanding and was known as the White-Haired Devil. He emphasized relentless fundamentals and could intimidate players with his severity.

His later methods are gentler without becoming permissive. Anzai allows players room to develop but recognizes when discipline is necessary, and his calm decisions during games often prevent Shohoku's emotional roster from losing control.

Anzai is an accomplished basketball strategist with exceptional ability to recognize talent. He sees possibilities in players that others dismiss, most notably Sakuragi, whose technical inexperience initially obscures remarkable athletic gifts.

He excels at individualized coaching. Rather than treating every player identically, Anzai identifies specific weaknesses and creates focused solutions. Sakuragi's intensive jump-shot program is a prime example: thousands of repetitions are used to turn a glaring weakness into a usable offensive weapon.

His tactical calm is equally important during games. Anzai avoids unnecessary intervention, trusting his players when appropriate and using substitutions or brief instructions when they can change the rhythm of a match.

Anzai presides over Shohoku's transformation from an underachieving team built around Takenori Akagi into a genuine contender. The return of Hisashi Mitsui and Ryota Miyagi, combined with the arrival of Sakuragi and Rukawa, gives him a roster capable of pursuing Akagi's national ambitions.

His relationship with Mitsui predates the main story. Anzai's words after Mitsui's junior-high injury become deeply important to him, and Mitsui continues to regard Anzai with profound respect even after abandoning basketball.

Anzai later refuses to endorse Rukawa's immediate plan to play in the United States. His caution comes from Ryuji Yazawa, a brilliant former student who rejected Anzai's demanding training and left prematurely for America. Yazawa struggled there and later died in a car accident, an experience that profoundly changed Anzai's life and coaching personality.

At the national tournament, Anzai's belief in Shohoku becomes central to the team's refusal to concede against overwhelming opposition. His conviction that the game remains recoverable gives his players a psychological anchor when the situation appears hopeless.

Hanamichi Sakuragi develops an unusually informal relationship with Anzai, calling him "Oyaji" and physically playing with his chin. Anzai tolerates the behavior while taking Sakuragi's potential extremely seriously.

Kaede Rukawa seeks Anzai's approval for his ambition to play in America. Anzai instead challenges him to establish himself at the highest level in Japan first.

Hisashi Mitsui regards Anzai as the coach who gave him hope after injury. That memory remains powerful even during Mitsui's years away from basketball.

Takenori Akagi spends years pursuing a national championship under Anzai and becomes the captain around whom Shohoku's competitive identity is built.

Ryota Miyagi serves as Anzai's starting point guard and is trusted with organizing Shohoku's offense.

Ryuji Yazawa was Anzai's gifted university player. Yazawa's departure for America and subsequent death became the defining tragedy of Anzai's earlier coaching career.
