Gaston

Gaston is loyal, friendly and comparatively grounded. He respects Guts without treating him as an unreachable legend and can socialize with him more casually than many ordinary Raiders.

He also has aspirations outside warfare. Gaston's dream of becoming a tailor and opening a shop demonstrates that serving in the Hawks is a means of building a future rather than the entirety of his identity.

That ordinary ambition makes him representative of the many mercenaries whose lives become attached to Griffith's larger dream without necessarily sharing his immense ambitions.

Gaston is an experienced mercenary and capable swordsman. As a Raider under Guts's command, he belongs to the Band of the Hawk's aggressive assault force and participates in dangerous frontline operations.

He is nowhere near Guts's level, but his survival through years of campaigning indicates considerable practical combat experience.

Gaston possesses no supernatural abilities.

Gaston serves beneath Guts during the Band of the Hawk's rise in the Hundred-Year War. His friendship with his commander helps establish that Guts has become more than a solitary fighter; he now has soldiers who trust him personally.

When Guts leaves the Hawks, Gaston also eventually departs and attempts to pursue his civilian dream. After learning what has happened to the company, however, he returns to help his former comrades.

Gaston is present during the Eclipse and initially survives the Apostles' attack long enough to reunite with Guts. Moments later, his body grotesquely ruptures from an Apostle's attack, and he dies in Guts's arms.

Guts is Gaston's commander, friend and drinking companion. Gaston trusts him as the leader of the Raiders and later returns to support the Hawks after Guts's departure.

Griffith is the overall commander under whom Gaston serves during the Band of the Hawk's rise.

Casca, Judeau, Pippin, Corkus and Rickert are Gaston's fellow members of the original Band of the Hawk.
