Personality
Personality
Pippin is quiet, patient and dependable. He rarely speaks unnecessarily, but when he does it is often to warn his companions or make a practical observation that others have missed.
His friendship is expressed more through actions than conversation. When Guts first joins the Hawks and isolates himself from the celebration, Pippin physically carries him over to drink with the others. Even Guts's irritated response does little to disturb his calm.
Pippin is also protective, particularly toward Rickert. His imposing appearance hides one of the gentler personalities among the Hawks.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Pippin possesses extraordinary physical strength for an ordinary human. His heavy mace can crush armored opponents, and he can lift and carry Guts without difficulty.
Guts jokingly describes himself and Pippin as the Hawks' "power tag," reflecting Pippin's role as one of the unit's strongest close-combat fighters. He is also capable of operating heavy battlefield equipment.
His former mining experience proves unexpectedly valuable during Griffith's rescue. When combustible material ignites underground, Pippin recognizes the danger and helps create an escape for the flames through the tunnel ceiling.
Story Role
Story Role
Pippin is among the established Hawks when Guts joins the company. He participates in their campaigns throughout the Hundred-Year War and becomes one of the comrades who gradually make the mercenary band feel like a home to Guts.
After Griffith's imprisonment, Pippin remains with the surviving Hawks and joins Guts, Casca and the others in the mission to rescue their former commander from the Tower of Rebirth.
During the Eclipse, Pippin fights desperately against the Apostles and protects Casca from an enormous attacker. He is ultimately overwhelmed and killed, with an Apostle later using his mutilated body to lure Guts closer before tearing it apart.
Relationships
Relationships
Guts becomes Pippin's friend and fellow heavy fighter. Pippin helps draw the withdrawn swordsman into the Band of the Hawk's camaraderie.
Rickert is frequently protected by Pippin, whose behavior toward the younger Hawk resembles that of an older brother.
Griffith is Pippin's commander and the leader whose ambitions the original Hawks follow.
Casca is a fellow senior Hawk whom Pippin fights beside throughout the Golden Age.
Judeau and Corkus are among Pippin's closest recurring comrades within the original Band of the Hawk.
