Personality
Personality
Charlotte is shy, gentle and uncomfortable with many expectations of royal life. She dislikes hunting and warfare and has little enthusiasm for lavish celebrations held while soldiers are dying.
Her sheltered upbringing initially leaves her uncertain and easily embarrassed, particularly around Griffith. Nevertheless, Charlotte possesses more determination than her demeanor suggests. When someone she loves is endangered, she can lie to guards, bribe officials and directly place herself in danger.
Charlotte is also notably free of the overt class arrogance displayed by many Midland nobles. Casca observes that she lacks the high-handed behavior expected of royalty.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Charlotte has no supernatural powers and little formal combat ability. Her skills reflect her royal upbringing: she is accomplished at embroidery, tea preparation and other courtly activities.
Her greatest practical power is political. As Midland's princess and royal heir, her recognition can legitimize military leadership and shape the loyalties of nobles who would otherwise refuse to cooperate.
Charlotte also displays surprising courage under pressure. She once intercepts a poisoned projectile intended for Griffith and later participates in dangerous efforts to reach him.
Story Role
Story Role
Charlotte first meets Griffith when he catches her after she stumbles. Their subsequent conversations during royal events deepen her attraction to him, while his growing closeness to the princess strengthens his position within Midland's court.
After Guts leaves the Band of the Hawk, a distraught Griffith goes to Charlotte's chambers and sleeps with her. The king discovers the relationship and has Griffith imprisoned and tortured.
Charlotte later helps Guts, Casca, Judeau and Pippin reach the Tower of Rebirth to rescue Griffith. Her willingness to deceive guards and use her royal access becomes essential to the mission.
Years later, Griffith rescues Charlotte from Kushan captivity. She publicly declares him her fiancé and appoints him supreme commander of Midland's forces, giving his reborn Band of the Hawk formal royal legitimacy.
Relationships
Relationships
Griffith is Charlotte's great love. She remains devoted to him despite enormous upheaval and later publicly declares their engagement after he rescues her from Kushan captivity.
Midland no Ou is Charlotte's father. Their relationship begins as that of a protected royal daughter and an affectionate parent, but his obsessive response to Charlotte's relationship with Griffith destroys her trust in him.
Queen of Midland is Charlotte's stepmother and disapproves of her attachment to Griffith.
Anna is Charlotte's loyal handmaiden and closest everyday companion.
Julius is Charlotte's paternal uncle, while Adonis is her cousin.
Casca, Guts, Judeau and Pippin receive Charlotte's assistance during the effort to rescue Griffith.
