At Eden Academy, Anya attempts to earn a Stella Star through an interclass dodgeball match, only to confront the physically imposing Bill Watkins. A later volunteer assignment at a hospital gives her a more meaningful opportunity: telepathy alerts her to a drowning child whom nobody else can hear. Her rescue earns the first Stella Star of her class. The volume closes by foreshadowing the arrival of a large white dog whose unusual abilities connect it to the Forger family.
