Yuki Souma

Yuki is courteous, intelligent and outwardly composed, but much of that refinement developed as a protective shell. He struggles to approach people naturally and envies those who can argue, joke or form friendships without being placed on a pedestal.

He has a sharp side that emerges most readily around Kyou. Their constant fighting reflects genuine resentment, but Yuki's hostility is complicated by envy: Kyou appears capable of entering groups and expressing emotions in ways Yuki believes are impossible for him.

As his confidence develops, Yuki becomes more willing to speak bluntly, tease friends and take responsibility for others. His decision to participate seriously in the student council is particularly important because it forces him to build relationships independently of Tooru and the Souma household.

As the Rat, Yuki transforms into a rat when the Zodiac curse is triggered. He also possesses the unusually strong spiritual position associated with the Rat within the Souma Zodiac.

Yuki is an accomplished martial artist and consistently defeats Kyou in their fights despite Kyou's obsessive training. His technique emphasizes composure and precision rather than Kyou's more openly aggressive approach.

He is academically capable and surprisingly skilled at gardening, maintaining vegetables around Shigure's property. His weaknesses include poor cooking ability and recurring respiratory problems, including asthma that was more severe during childhood.

Yuki is one of the first Soumas Tooru meets and one of the people who bring her into Shigure's household. His early story focuses on the contrast between his enormous popularity at school and the isolation he actually experiences.

Joining the student council expands his life beyond the Souma family. Through Kakeru Manabe, Machi Kuragi, Kimi Toudou and Naohito Sakuragi, he gradually experiences the messy, ordinary peer relationships he had always wanted.

Yuki eventually recognizes that his attachment to Tooru is not the romantic love he initially tries to interpret it as. Accepting that distinction allows him to pursue an independent identity and acknowledge his developing romantic feelings for Machi.

Tooru Honda gives Yuki the emotional safety he lacked as a child. He eventually understands that the comfort he receives from her feels maternal to him, an admission that helps him stop defining himself through competition for her affection.

Kyou Souma is Yuki's lifelong rival. Yuki envies Kyou Souma's ability to interact naturally with others even while Kyou Souma envies Yuki's privileged position as the Rat.

Ayame Souma is Yuki's much older brother. Their relationship begins badly because Ayame Souma ignored him during childhood, but the older brother later makes persistent attempts to repair the damage.

Akito Souma subjected Yuki to prolonged emotional abuse and isolation during childhood, leaving lasting psychological effects.

Kakeru Manabe becomes Yuki's closest male friend through the student council and repeatedly challenges his controlled demeanor.

Machi Kuragi sees Yuki as an ordinary, lonely person rather than the school's flawless prince. Their growing mutual understanding develops into a romantic relationship.
