Personality
Personality
Machi is reserved, blunt and initially difficult to read. She often appears expressionless and has little interest in maintaining the social performance expected by the people around her.
Her aversion to perfection is rooted in childhood pressure. Machi was trained relentlessly by her mother to become an ideal child, leaving her unable to tolerate things that look too carefully arranged or flawless. She may disrupt a perfectly neat room or damage an untouched object because imperfection makes it feel more real and less oppressive.
She is also perceptive. Machi quickly recognizes that Yuki's polished school persona does not reflect his actual emotional state, partly because she understands what it is like to be shaped by expectations imposed by other people.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Machi has no supernatural abilities. Her strengths are observation, directness and a capacity to recognize emotional details that other students overlook.
She performs the administrative work expected of the student council treasurer, although her quiet manner contrasts sharply with the louder personalities around her.
Machi's most significant development is psychological rather than physical. As she gains relationships in which imperfection is accepted, she becomes better able to express preferences, anger, affection and ordinary wants that she previously suppressed.
Story Role
Story Role
Machi joins Yuki's student council alongside Kakeru Manabe, Kimi Toudou and Naohito Sakuragi. Her presence is initially mysterious because of her withdrawn behavior and occasional destruction of apparently harmless objects.
Her family circumstances gradually explain that behavior. She and Kakeru share a father but have different mothers, and both were drawn into a bitter competition over which child would become their father's heir.
After a younger brother is born, Machi is discarded as a candidate and later accused of trying to harm him, deepening her isolation. Her growing connection with Yuki helps her reclaim a sense of personal worth, and the two eventually acknowledge romantic feelings for one another.
Relationships
Relationships
Yuki Souma is one of the first people to recognize Machi without demanding that she be perfect. Machi similarly sees Yuki Souma as a lonely boy rather than an untouchable prince. Their friendship gradually becomes romantic.
Kakeru Manabe is Machi's older half-brother. Their mothers' rivalry turns Kakeru Manabe and Machi into competing potential heirs during childhood, though the siblings themselves eventually develop a more functional relationship.
Tooru Honda becomes known to Machi through Yuki and the wider circle surrounding the student council.
