Tooru Honda

Tooru is exceptionally kind, courteous and attentive to other people's feelings. She speaks formally even with friends, a habit connected to the speech patterns of her father, Katsuya Honda. Her politeness is sometimes grammatically unusual, but it has become an inseparable part of how she presents herself.

Her optimism is genuine but not uncomplicated. Tooru instinctively minimizes her own pain and finds reasons to excuse or understand people who hurt her. Kyou Souma, Isuzu Souma and Saki Hanajima are among those who recognize that her selflessness can become unhealthy when she refuses to acknowledge her own wants.

Tooru is also practical and hardworking. She cooks, cleans, works to help cover her expenses and tries intensely not to become a financial burden. Even when frightened or uncertain, she usually responds by asking what she can do for someone else.

Tooru has no supernatural powers and is not part of the Chinese Zodiac curse. Her strengths are domestic competence, persistence and an unusual ability to make emotionally guarded people feel safe enough to speak honestly.

She is an experienced cook and housekeeper, skills that quickly make her important in Shigure's disorderly household. Her work ethic also allows her to maintain a part-time cleaning job alongside school and household responsibilities.

Her emotional perceptiveness is imperfect—she can be remarkably slow to recognize romantic feelings—but she listens without immediately judging. This becomes especially significant among Souma family members who have learned to hide fear, anger or vulnerability from one another.

Tooru's arrival brings an outsider into the secluded world of the Souma family. After discovering that certain Soumas transform into Zodiac animals when embraced by someone of the opposite sex, she is allowed to retain her memories and becomes increasingly connected to the cursed members.

Her relationships with Yuki and Kyou develop alongside her growing understanding of the curse, while encounters with figures such as Hatori Souma, Momiji Souma, Kisa Souma and Hatsuharu Souma expose different consequences of belonging to the family.

As Tooru learns more about the curse, she stops treating it as an immutable fact and actively searches for a way to free the people she loves. Her own emotional arc simultaneously forces her to confront how tightly she has clung to her late mother and to acknowledge that she wants a future with Kyou.

Kyoko Honda is Tooru's mother and the central emotional figure of her childhood. Tooru continues using Kyoko Honda's memories and advice as a source of guidance long after losing her.

Katsuya Honda is Tooru's father, who died when she was very young. Tooru's unusually formal speech develops partly from imitating Katsuya Honda's manner of speaking.

Kyou Souma initially clashes with Tooru's gentleness but gradually becomes one of the people closest to her. Their feelings eventually become explicitly romantic, and Tooru chooses a future at his side.

Yuki Souma is Tooru's classmate and one of the first Soumas to offer her a home. Their intimacy is profound, though Yuki eventually understands that the emotional comfort he seeks from her resembles maternal love rather than romance.

Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima are Tooru's closest school friends and fiercely protective of her.

Shigure Souma provides Tooru with a home and becomes her adult guardian within the household, although he also knowingly allows her presence to advance his own plans concerning the Zodiac curse.
