Kyou Souma

Kyou is blunt, impatient and extremely easy to provoke. He frequently responds to embarrassment with anger and has little of Yuki's polished social manner, but his hostility often masks insecurity rather than genuine malice.

He becomes noticeably gentler around people he trusts. Kyou is observant of Tooru's moods and can recognize when her cheerful behavior is concealing exhaustion or distress. He is uncomfortable expressing tenderness directly, so concern often appears through practical actions or awkward arguments.

His obsession with defeating Yuki gives him a simple target for years of anger he does not know how to process. As Kyou matures, he is increasingly forced to distinguish the rivalry he has constructed from the deeper fears surrounding his identity as the Cat.

Kyou transforms into an orange cat when the Zodiac curse is triggered. Unlike the twelve official Zodiac members, the Cat occupies an ostracized position within the Souma tradition.

He is a highly trained martial artist taught by Kazuma Souma, whom he regards as his master and parental figure. Kyou possesses considerable strength, agility and endurance, although he repeatedly fails to defeat Yuki in direct fights.

Kyou also wears a bracelet made from juzu beads that has an important connection to the Cat's curse. Removing it releases the Cat's grotesque true form, a transformation accompanied by an overpowering smell and a drastic loss of human appearance.

Kyou enters Shigure's household as Yuki's aggressive rival but soon becomes a permanent resident and Tooru's classmate. His presence creates a volatile household dynamic while bringing the excluded Cat directly into Tooru's growing relationship with the Zodiac.

His history with Kazuma and the treatment reserved for previous Cats reveal that the curse is not merely an inconvenience. The Cat bears a special burden of rejection within the family, and Kyou grows up expecting that his future has already been decided for him.

As the story progresses, Kyou must confront both his expected confinement as the Cat and the guilt he carries over Kyoko's death. He eventually stops using Yuki as the target for that guilt and admits that he wants to live freely with Tooru.

Tooru Honda becomes the person with whom Kyou feels most able to live without treating his identity as the Cat as something shameful. Their mutual love eventually becomes explicit, and he chooses to build his future with her.

Yuki Souma is Kyou's lifelong rival and the Rat he believes he must defeat. Both boys envy qualities in the other that they cannot recognize in themselves.

Kazuma Souma is Kyou's martial-arts master and surrogate father. Kazuma Souma takes him in as a child and becomes one of the first adults to give him stable affection.

Kagura Souma has known Kyou since childhood and loudly insists that she loves him. Her eventual confession reveals that their childhood bond began partly from pity and her desire to feel better about her own place in the Zodiac.

Kyoko Honda encountered Kyou before he became close to Tooru. Kyou's memories of her death become one of the deepest sources of guilt shaping his behavior.
