Totomaru

Totomaru is confident, observant, and somewhat more comedic than Phantom Lord's other elite elemental mages. He often comments aloud on both his own advantages and the tactical strengths of his opponents.

He enjoys showing off the unusual properties of his flames and occasionally uses deliberately ridiculous effects, such as foul-smelling fire, simply to disrupt an enemy.

Despite his confidence, Totomaru can recognize stalemates. His first battle with Natsu quickly becomes awkward because both combatants possess abilities that make ordinary fire attacks ineffective.

Totomaru uses Rainbow Fire, a specialized form of Fire Magic that produces flames in different colors with different characteristics.

Blue Fire is cold rather than conventionally hot, while Orange Fire produces an overpowering foul smell. Other flames extend the range of properties available to him.

More importantly, Totomaru can manipulate external fire. He seizes control of Natsu Dragneel's flames during their battle and redirects them, temporarily turning Natsu's principal offensive ability against him.

Totomaru also carries a katana and possesses enough swordsmanship to switch to physical combat when elemental attacks prove ineffective.

Totomaru appears during Phantom Lord's full assault on Fairy Tail and guards the Lacrima powering the Jupiter cannon inside Phantom Lord's mobile headquarters.

Natsu infiltrates the fortress intending to destroy the Lacrima before Jupiter can fire again. Totomaru intercepts him and initially neutralizes Natsu's attacks by controlling the flames he produces.

The battle becomes increasingly absurd as Natsu's immunity to fire prevents Totomaru's own flames from hurting him while Totomaru continues redirecting Natsu's attacks.

Natsu eventually generates more fire than Totomaru can control and destroys the Lacrima. Totomaru attempts to continue the fight but is subsequently incapacitated when Gray Fullbuster freezes him and Elfman Strauss sends him away.

After Phantom Lord dissolves, Totomaru becomes a magic teacher and instructs Romeo Conbolt in varieties of Fire Magic.

Jose Porla is Totomaru's guild master during his time in Phantom Lord.

Aria, Juvia Lockser, and Sol are his fellow members of the Element 4.

Natsu Dragneel is Totomaru's principal opponent during the Phantom Lord war and the fire mage whose flames he attempts to control.

Gray Fullbuster intervenes near the end of Totomaru's confrontation with Natsu and freezes him.

Elfman Strauss helps remove the frozen Totomaru from the fight.

Romeo Conbolt later studies Fire Magic under Totomaru after the dissolution of Phantom Lord.
