Jose Porla

Jose is arrogant, vindictive, calculating, and intensely concerned with Phantom Lord's prestige. He cannot tolerate Fairy Tail being treated as an equal and interprets the other guild's success as an insult to his own authority.

His confidence is backed by genuine strength. Unlike many antagonists who exaggerate their ability, Jose has officially been recognized as one of the Ten Wizard Saints and possesses enough magical power that his confrontation with Makarov affects the surrounding environment.

Jose also favors indirect cruelty. He uses guild members, magical constructs, hostages, and long-range weapons before personally entering battle, preferring to control the battlefield while opponents are forced to respond.

Jose is a master of Shade, which allows him to create and control ghostlike magical entities. These shades can attack independently, form larger destructive masses, immobilize targets, and overwhelm weaker mages through numbers.

Shade Troopers create humanoid soldiers that Jose can command remotely. He can strengthen them and use them across a broad battlefield, allowing Phantom Lord's headquarters to function like an army rather than merely a guild building.

Jose can also create Thought Projections convincing enough to interact with opponents while his real body remains elsewhere.

His magical power is immense. As a Wizard Saint, he can contend with high-level mages and overpower an exhausted Erza Scarlet before facing Makarov directly.

Jose initiates the Phantom Lord war after Phantom Lord attacks Fairy Tail's guild hall and later targets several members personally.

The immediate commission comes from Jude Heartfilia, who wants his daughter Lucy Heartfilia returned. Jose sees Lucy's connection to the wealthy Heartfilia family as an opportunity that could dramatically increase Fairy Tail's influence if left unchecked.

Jose therefore escalates the mission into an attempt to destroy Fairy Tail itself. Phantom Lord deploys Jupiter, transforms its headquarters into the Super Mage Giant Phantom MK II, and uses the Element 4 to fight Fairy Tail's strongest members.

After Makarov recovers, the two Wizard Saints confront each other directly. Makarov ultimately uses Fairy Law and overwhelms Jose.

The Magic Council subsequently holds Jose responsible for initiating an illegal guild war, removes his Wizard Saint title, and dissolves Phantom Lord.

Makarov Dreyar is Jose's principal rival and fellow Wizard Saint. Jose resents Fairy Tail's rise under him and eventually brings their guilds into open war.

Gajeel Redfox is one of Phantom Lord's strongest mages and performs some of Jose's most brutal attacks against Fairy Tail.

Aria, Juvia Lockser, Sol, and Totomaru comprise the Element 4 under Jose's command.

Lucy Heartfilia is the principal hostage Jose seeks to capture during the guild war.

Jude Heartfilia hires Phantom Lord to retrieve Lucy, giving Jose the commission from which he expands the conflict.

Erza Scarlet confronts Jose inside Phantom Lord's headquarters but is already heavily weakened by protecting Fairy Tail from Jupiter.
