Shinra Kusakabe

Shinra grows up in the Tokyo Empire with his mother and younger brother. From childhood he admires the idea of heroes and wants to become someone capable of saving others, an ambition that his mother encourages rather than dismisses. His naturally unusual smile complicates that image: whenever he becomes nervous or emotionally strained, the muscles around his mouth pull into a wide grin that exposes his pointed teeth.

His childhood changes completely during a devastating house fire. Shinra remembers flames, a mysterious figure and the apparent loss of his family, while the public explanation places responsibility for the disaster on his newly awakened pyrokinetic power. The sight of his nervous grin during the aftermath only strengthens rumors that he was somehow responsible, and he spends years being regarded by some people around him as a devil rather than the hero he wanted to become.

Shinra refuses to accept that judgment. He attends the Special Fire Force training academy, develops his ability to control the flames emitted from his feet and commits himself to becoming a firefighter capable of saving people from Spontaneous Human Combustion. Twelve years after the incident, he is assigned to Company 8 under Akitaru Obi.

Company 8 is unlike a normal firefighting unit. In addition to putting Infernals to rest, its members investigate the Special Fire Force itself and the institutions connected to the phenomenon of spontaneous combustion. Working beside Takehisa Hinawa, Maki Oze, Iris and fellow rookie Arthur Boyle gives Shinra both a professional home and a route toward examining the inconsistencies surrounding his childhood tragedy.

The investigation gradually connects his past with the White-Clad, the Evangelist and the mysterious realm known as Adolla. Shinra discovers that his family's fire was not the simple accident he had been taught to believe.

One of the earliest major revelations is that Shinra's younger brother, Shō Kusakabe, survived the fire and was taken by the White-Clad. The mysterious figure Shinra remembered seeing in the flames was connected to Shō's disappearance rather than proof that Shinra himself had caused the tragedy.

Shinra later learns that his mother, Mari Kusakabe, was transformed into the Infernal known as the Demon Infernal that appeared during the fire. The disaster therefore separated the family in three different ways: Shinra survived, Shō was taken, and Mari became an Infernal.

Shinra is energetic, stubborn and strongly attached to his childhood ideal of becoming a hero. His definition of heroism is practical rather than ceremonial: a hero is someone who arrives when people are in danger and saves them.

The nervous grin that repeatedly causes others to misunderstand him is involuntary. Shinra smiles most visibly when frightened, embarrassed, angry or emotionally overwhelmed, producing the opposite facial expression from what those situations normally demand. His pointed teeth intensify the effect and contribute to the "devil" reputation attached to him after his family tragedy.

He is sensitive about being treated as frightening or malicious, especially because that judgment followed him from childhood. Rather than abandoning the hero ideal, however, Shinra turns it into a personal challenge. If other people see a devil when they look at him, he intends to prove through his actions that they are wrong.

Shinra is also highly competitive. Arthur's confidence and tendency to frame himself as a knight provoke him easily, and the two frequently turn ordinary training or conversation into rivalry. Their arguments conceal substantial trust; each becomes one of the few combatants capable of understanding the other's limits and fighting beside him against exceptionally dangerous enemies.

He can be impulsive when family or civilians are threatened. Shinra's normal tactical judgment sometimes gives way to direct aggression when he encounters people responsible for human experimentation, artificial Infernal creation or the suffering of those close to him.

That impulsiveness coexists with considerable empathy. He takes the ritual of putting Infernals to rest seriously because each Infernal was once an ordinary person. He does not view defeating them merely as exterminating monsters.

His sense of responsibility expands as the story progresses. Shinra initially wants to clear his own name and learn the truth about his family, but experiences with Company 8 turn the survival of the wider population into an equally personal concern.

Even when his powers grow beyond the scale of ordinary firefighting, his stated motivation remains recognizable: save people, protect his family and become the kind of hero he imagined as a child.

Shinra is a lean, athletic young man standing 173 cm tall. His build reflects years of combat and firefighter training, with especially powerful legs because his pyrokinetic ability depends on kicks, acceleration and control of flame generated from his feet.

He has short, spiky black hair and striking red eyes. His most distinctive facial feature is his wide, sharp-toothed grin, which appears involuntarily during nervousness or emotional stress.

As a member of Company 8, Shinra wears the standard dark Special Fire Force protective uniform. Reflective blue bands run across the jacket, trousers and sleeves, and the unit number identifies his company.

During ordinary duty he frequently wears the coat open or leaves parts of the firefighting equipment less formally arranged than more disciplined members of the company. His clothing must also accommodate the ignition points at his feet.

When using his Third Generation ability, flames erupt from the soles of his feet. The combustion leaves characteristic burning footprints behind him, providing the basis for the epithet Devil's Footprints.

As his relationship with Adolla deepens, visual signs of his power become more dramatic. Greater acceleration produces stronger flame output, and Adolla-enhanced states surround his movement with increasingly intense heat and light.

His ultimate late-series transformation radically alters his appearance after his existence combines with Shō and Mari. In that form, Shinra becomes Shinrabanshō-man, a divine-scale being whose appearance and abilities reflect the merging of the Kusakabe family and the power of Adolla.

Shinra begins as a Third Generation pyrokinetic, meaning he can create and manipulate his own flames. His ignition ability is unusual because combustion originates from his feet rather than his hands or the surrounding environment.

The resulting thrust gives him exceptional mobility. By adjusting flame output independently from either foot, Shinra can accelerate forward, brake, change direction in midair, run vertically across surfaces and sustain powered flight.

His fighting style therefore centers on kicks. Rather than simply launching fire as a projectile, he converts combustion into momentum and transfers that momentum through physical strikes.

The combination makes him dangerous at both range and close quarters. Even an ordinary kick becomes far more destructive when delivered after high-speed acceleration.

Shinra has excellent leg strength without relying solely on fire. His academy training gives him considerable physical conditioning, allowing him to continue fighting when ignition abilities are limited or temporarily disrupted.

He also develops increasingly precise control over his thrust. Early movement can be reckless, but repeated combat teaches him to alter angle, acceleration and timing in fractions of a second.

A major increase in his potential comes from possessing an Adolla Burst, an exceptionally rare flame linked directly to Adolla. The Adolla Burst is central to the wider mysteries surrounding the Great Cataclysm, Amaterasu and the Evangelist.

The Burst also makes Shinra one of the Pillars sought by the White-Clad. His existence is valuable not merely because he is a capable firefighter but because his flame can participate in the mechanisms capable of triggering another Cataclysm.

Through an Adolla Link, Shinra can connect with people and phenomena associated with Adolla. These connections allow him to perceive emotions, memories or events beyond ordinary physical interaction.

When receiving the Evangelist's Grace, his flame output reaches a radically higher level. Shinra can accelerate his body to relativistic and eventually faster-than-light speeds, producing effects that operate outside ordinary perceptions of time.

At sufficiently extreme acceleration, Shinra's body breaks apart at the particle level and then reconstructs as he moves. This ability allows him to surpass Shō's Severed Universe by acting beyond the time manipulation that otherwise leaves opponents motionless.

Repeated exposure to Adolla gradually changes Shinra from an ordinary Third Generation user into something closer to a Fourth Generation pyrokinetic, with powers shaped directly by the connection between human perception and Adolla.

During the final Cataclysm, the boundary between human thought, reality and Adolla collapses. Shinra's abilities subsequently expand far beyond combustion and movement into the manipulation of reality itself.

After merging with Shō and their mother, Shinra becomes Shinrabanshō-man. In this state he can manipulate reality at a fundamental level, reverse events and reshape the world created through the interaction between humanity and Adolla.

Devil's Footprints refers broadly to Shinra's ignition ability. Flames erupt from his feet and provide thrust for acceleration, aerial movement and flame-enhanced kicks.

Rapid concentrates combustion into sudden bursts of acceleration. Shinra uses these bursts to close distance or reposition before an opponent can react.

Corna directs a concentrated kick toward a target using controlled propulsion from one or both feet. The technique combines the physical impact of Shinra's strike with the explosive force generated by ignition.

Corna: Sol is a stronger application of his kick-based combat, increasing rotational and explosive force to deliver a more destructive strike.

Hellfire represents extreme flame output generated during high-intensity combat. Shinra forces his ignition ability beyond ordinary operational levels to overwhelm powerful opponents.

Hand Signs become part of Shinra's later control training. By adopting specific gestures associated with the teaching traditions of the Holy Sol Temple and Benimaru's instruction, he improves his concentration and control over flame.

Hysterical Strength involves tapping into the extraordinary strength that the human body normally suppresses to prevent self-injury. Training with Benimaru Shinmon helps Shinra access a greater portion of that capacity in combat.

Adolla Link connects Shinra with Adolla or another person whose consciousness is linked to it. The phenomenon can transfer perceptions and emotions rather than functioning like a conventional attack.

Adolla Burst is the unique pure flame carried by Shinra. It connects him to Adolla and identifies him as one of the Pillars required by the Evangelist's plans.

Grace-Enhanced Acceleration uses the Evangelist's Grace to raise Shinra's propulsion to extraordinary speeds.

Lightspeed Movement allows Shinra to exceed the limits governing ordinary matter. His body separates into particles during acceleration and reconstructs afterward, enabling him to move through Shō's time-stopping Severed Universe.

Shinrabanshō-man is Shinra's ultimate state rather than a conventional technique. After combining with his family, he acquires reality-altering power on the scale required to oppose the final manifestation of despair associated with the Cataclysm.

Akitaru Obi is Shinra's captain and one of the adults who gives him a genuine opportunity to become the hero he wants to be. Shinra Kusakabe respects Akitaru Obi's refusal to treat either firefighters or civilians as expendable.

Akitaru Obi also represents an important counterexample to the idea that pyrokinetic ability determines someone's value. Although he possesses no ignition ability, his leadership, physical strength and courage make him the foundation of Company 8.

Takehisa Hinawa acts as Shinra's lieutenant and one of his strictest instructors. Shinra Kusakabe frequently experiences Takehisa Hinawa's discipline as intimidating, but he trusts Hinawa's judgment in combat.

Hinawa teaches Shinra Kusakabe that being a firefighter requires precision and restraint rather than simply possessing powerful flames. His insistence on procedure helps balance Shinra's tendency toward impulsive action.

Arthur Boyle is Shinra's principal teammate-rival. Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle trained together before joining Company 8 and develop an argumentative relationship almost immediately.

Arthur Boyle's self-image as a knight irritates Shinra Kusakabe, who frequently challenges both his logic and his claims of superiority. Their fights and insults continue even after the two become deeply trusted comrades.

In battle, however, Shinra Kusakabe recognizes Arthur Boyle as one of the few people capable of matching the scale of the threats facing Company 8. Arthur likewise accepts Shinra's determination even when he refuses to stop competing with him.

Maki Oze is one of Shinra's senior teammates and an important training partner. Shinra Kusakabe respects Maki Oze's considerable physical and pyrokinetic ability despite occasionally being caught in the consequences of comments about her physique.

Iris provides Company 8 with its religious support and performs prayers for the people who become Infernals. Shinra Kusakabe values Iris's compassion and repeatedly protects her during missions.

The relationship carries romantic undertones at several points, though Shinra's responsibilities and the larger crisis surrounding Adolla prevent romance from becoming the dominant feature of their interactions.

Tamaki Kotatsu initially belongs to Company 1 before circumstances bring her into prolonged contact with Company 8. Shinra Kusakabe becomes one of the people who defends Tamaki Kotatsu during her crisis involving Rekka.

Tamaki Kotatsu gradually trusts Shinra Kusakabe, although embarrassment and repeated accidental situations frequently complicate their interactions.

Leonard Burns is deeply connected to the unanswered questions surrounding Shinra's family fire. Shinra Kusakabe initially sees Leonard Burns as one of the adults who may know what actually happened twelve years earlier.

Their relationship becomes increasingly adversarial as Burns' loyalty to the Holy Sol Temple and his interpretation of divine authority diverge from Shinra's determination to act according to his own sense of justice.

Benimaru Shinmon becomes one of Shinra's most important combat mentors. Shinra Kusakabe initially encounters Benimaru Shinmon as the overwhelmingly powerful captain of Company 7.

Benimaru later trains Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle, helping them push their abilities beyond the habits developed through ordinary academy instruction.

Joker operates outside the normal Special Fire Force command structure but repeatedly provides Shinra with information connected to the hidden history of the Tokyo Empire. Shinra Kusakabe does not fully trust Joker, yet their goals overlap whenever uncovering suppressed truths becomes more important than institutional loyalty.

Viktor Licht joins Company 8 as a scientist and gives Shinra access to technical knowledge about combustion, Adolla and the institutions investigating both. Shinra Kusakabe remains cautious about Viktor Licht's connections but increasingly relies on his expertise.

Giovanni becomes one of Company 8's recurring enemies. Shinra Kusakabe's opposition to Giovanni is strengthened by the latter's role in the White-Clad's experiments and his history with Company 3.

Haumea is one of the Pillars aligned with the White-Clad and repeatedly interferes with Shinra through her Adolla-related abilities. Shinra Kusakabe experiences Haumea's powers as particularly dangerous because they can manipulate electrical signals and human behavior rather than relying solely on direct flame combat.

Charon serves as Haumea's guardian and becomes one of Shinra's physically strongest opponents. Shinra Kusakabe's clashes with Charon force him to confront an enemy capable of redirecting enormous quantities of energy.

Inca Kasugatani becomes another Pillar whose attraction to danger conflicts sharply with Shinra's concept of heroism. Shinra Kusakabe attempts to rescue Inca Kasugatani, while she actively prefers the risks offered by the White-Clad.

Later arcs broaden his relationships with other companies, Asakusa and the institutions surrounding Amaterasu. Company 8 increasingly becomes an investigative force challenging the official history of the world.

Shinra's growth parallels this expansion. He begins as a talented rookie whose strongest asset is unusual mobility and develops into a fighter capable of confronting the most dangerous White-Clad combatants.

The third and final anime season completed the adaptation in April 2026, bringing the animated story through the manga's conclusion.

As the Great Cataclysm begins, Shinra becomes increasingly tied to the collective perception shaping Adolla. The conflict moves beyond defeating individual enemies and becomes a struggle over whether humanity's despair will determine reality.

His disappearance into Adolla and later return place him at the center of the final confrontation. Shinra's accumulated bonds, particularly those connecting him with Shō and Mari, ultimately produce Shinrabanshō-man.

Shinra's name is written 森羅 日下部 in Japanese. The given name Shinra uses the kanji 森, "forest," and 羅, a character associated with spreading, arranging or encompassing.

The compound shinra is also recognizable from the Japanese expression shinra banshō (森羅万象), meaning all things in nature or everything in existence. This linguistic connection becomes increasingly significant as Shinra's role expands from firefighter to a figure involved in the structure of reality itself.

His surname Kusakabe is written 日下部. It is an established Japanese family name and is shared with Shō.

The epithet Devil's Footprints comes directly from the burning marks Shinra leaves when propelling himself with flames from his feet.
