Tamaki Kotatsu

Tamaki enters the Special Fire Force as a young Third Generation pyrokinetic and becomes a Second Class Fire Soldier of Company 1. She trains under the company's experienced personnel and develops Nekomata, an ignition ability that creates pink flames resembling feline ears, claws and two forked tails. Official anime material introduces her specifically as a rookie Company 1 firefighter before later circumstances lead to her being placed with Company 8.

Her time in Company 1 brings her into close contact with Rekka Hoshimiya, whom she greatly admires. Rekka presents himself as energetic, encouraging and passionately devoted to protecting people, qualities that make him an important senior figure to Tamaki. She trusts him enough that his approval carries considerable weight with her.

That trust becomes central to one of Tamaki's first major crises. Rekka is exposed as a member of the White-Clad who has been deliberately using Infernal Bugs on children in an attempt to locate people possessing an Adolla Burst. Tamaki discovers his activities and is physically attacked by the person she had regarded as a dependable superior. The incident shatters her image of him and leaves her unable to handle the confrontation alone.

Shinra Kusakabe intervenes during the confrontation, preventing Tamaki from being killed and fighting Rekka himself. The experience becomes one of the earliest moments in which Tamaki is forced to confront the gap between wanting to be a Fire Soldier and possessing the ability to protect herself when the people around her are genuinely dangerous.

Following the Rekka incident, Tamaki is placed under Company 8's supervision as part of disciplinary arrangements connected to what happened in Company 1. Official anime material describes the transfer as an assignment to Company 8 under the pretext of suspension or disciplinary custody.

The move significantly changes her development. Company 8 exposes Tamaki to a wider range of opponents, more intensive investigations and teammates whose abilities repeatedly force her to assess her own shortcomings. She remains technically associated with Company 1 for part of this period, but her day-to-day relationships increasingly center on Company 8.

Tamaki also begins training in the duties of a sister, learning the prayers used when Infernals are put to rest. That path gives her responsibilities beyond combat and places her closer to Iris, whose religious duties already form an essential part of Company 8's Infernal response.

Tamaki is emotional, competitive and quick to react when embarrassed or provoked. She is far less restrained than Company 8 members such as Takehisa Hinawa and frequently expresses irritation immediately rather than concealing it.

She also has a strong sense of pride. Tamaki dislikes being treated as helpless and becomes increasingly frustrated when dangerous situations leave her dependent on stronger fighters. Being rescued does not simply make her grateful; it often motivates her to improve so that she will not need the same protection next time.

Her impulsiveness can make her reckless. Tamaki occasionally enters situations before adequately considering the difference between her abilities and those of the opponent in front of her. At the same time, that willingness to act is frequently motivated by concern for someone else rather than a desire to show off.

Tamaki possesses an involuntary phenomenon commonly called her "Lucky Lecher Lure," through which bizarre accidents repeatedly leave her clothing displaced or place her in compromising physical situations. Official material explicitly identifies the trait as part of her characterization.

She finds the phenomenon humiliating and often responds violently to people caught up in it, whether or not they deliberately caused the incident. Shinra becomes a frequent participant in these accidents, which adds another layer of embarrassment to their relationship.

Beneath the temper, Tamaki is compassionate and strongly protective of children. Her reaction to Rekka's experiments is shaped not only by betrayal but by horror at seeing vulnerable children deliberately exposed to potentially fatal Infernal Bugs.

Tamaki is a seventeen-year-old girl standing 156 cm tall. She has long black hair ordinarily tied into twin tails and distinctive golden eyes with pale pupils. Her build is slender and athletic, reflecting the conditioning expected of a Fire Soldier.

Her standard Fire Force clothing incorporates the dark protective material and bright reflective bands used throughout the Special Fire Force. Tamaki's uniform is modified considerably compared with those worn by several other soldiers, leaving more freedom of movement for her legs and torso.

When performing religious duties, she can also wear clothing associated with the Holy Sol sisterhood. Her training as a sister becomes increasingly visible after her assignment to Company 8.

Nekomata produces Tamaki's most recognizable combat appearance. Pinkish flames gather around her body to create pointed cat ears, claw-like extensions and two long flaming tails. The visual resemblance to a nekomata, a supernatural cat from Japanese folklore, supplies the ability's name.

The tails are not purely decorative. They can change direction and provide propulsion, helping Tamaki maneuver rapidly in combat. The flame claws likewise turn her hands and feet into more dangerous close-range weapons.

As her control improves, the quantity and intensity of Nekomata's flames increase. Later versions make the feline silhouette considerably more pronounced and give her attacks much greater power than the relatively straightforward kicks and swipes seen earlier.

Tamaki is a Third Generation pyrokinetic, meaning she can generate her own flames rather than depending on an external source. Her ignition ability is called Nekomata, and official and licensed character descriptions identify the cat-shaped flames surrounding her body as its defining feature.

Nekomata concentrates Tamaki's flames around her rather than producing enormous detached fire attacks. The ability is therefore closely tied to physical movement. Flaming tails propel her through the air, while fire around her hands and feet strengthens attacks delivered at close range.

Like other Third Generation users, Tamaki possesses substantial resistance to heat produced by ordinary combustion. This enables her to fight inside environments that would rapidly incapacitate an unprotected civilian.

Her mobility is one of Nekomata's greatest advantages. The flame tails act almost like additional limbs or directional thrusters, allowing sudden acceleration, midair correction and unconventional angles of attack.

Tamaki combines this with martial-arts training. Her preferred attacks involve kicks, rapid forward movement and feline clawing motions rather than weapons.

Her early combat ability is nevertheless inconsistent. Tamaki has useful raw power but lacks the confidence, tactical sophistication and refined control shown by experienced fighters. Against opponents dramatically above her level, her tendency to attack directly can result in her being overwhelmed.

That weakness becomes a major source of frustration. Tamaki increasingly recognizes that having a Third Generation ability does not automatically make someone a strong Fire Soldier.

Training under Benimaru Shinmon becomes a major turning point. Benimaru refuses to compensate for her weaknesses or reassure her through empty praise. Tamaki has to improve her physical fundamentals and learn how to use Nekomata more decisively.

She eventually develops Hysterical Strength, the technique through which a person accesses a greater percentage of the physical strength normally limited by the body's protective mechanisms. This gives her a stronger foundation beneath her pyrokinetic attacks.

Tamaki's improved Nekomata can surround her more completely in flame and substantially increase her offensive output. The development represents a change from a fighter who primarily needs protection into someone capable of confronting dangerous opponents herself.

During the later Cataclysm conflict, Tamaki's power and self-confidence rise together as humanity's perceptions increasingly affect physical reality through Adolla. Her feline flames become much stronger, allowing her to participate directly in battles that earlier versions of herself could not have survived.

Nekomata is Tamaki's primary ignition ability. Pink flames surround her body and form feline ears, claws and two forked tails. The ability improves mobility, offensive power and aerial control.

Nekomata Fireball allows Tamaki to concentrate and release her flames offensively rather than relying exclusively on physical strikes.

Cat's Claw uses the flame formations around her limbs to enhance slashing or striking attacks at close range.

Hysterical Strength allows Tamaki to access greater physical output than the body would normally permit. The technique becomes important as she works to overcome the physical weakness she perceives in comparison with stronger Company 8 fighters.

Nekomata: Two-Tail Form represents the fuller expression of her characteristic twin-tailed flames, increasing the degree to which her ignition ability reinforces movement and attacks.

Tamaki's advanced Nekomata during the final conflict surrounds her with a much larger feline manifestation, reflecting both improved control and the extraordinary conditions created by the Cataclysm.

Shinra Kusakabe becomes one of the most important people in Tamaki's life after the Rekka incident. Tamaki Kotatsu initially encounters Shinra Kusakabe through Fire Force activities rather than as a close teammate, but their relationship changes dramatically once Rekka's betrayal is uncovered.

[Shinra Kusakabe protects Tamaki Kotatsu after Rekka attacks her and then confronts Rekka directly. Tamaki's inability to defend herself during the incident becomes one of the experiences that later fuels her desire to become stronger.](#spoiler)

Their subsequent relationship alternates between friendship, arguments and embarrassment. Tamaki Kotatsu's Lucky Lecher Lure repeatedly involves Shinra Kusakabe, often provoking immediate anger from her even when Shinra has little control over what happened.

Despite this, she trusts him. Tamaki Kotatsu has witnessed Shinra Kusakabe risk himself for her and other people repeatedly, and his determination to become a hero aligns with the idealistic reasons she originally admired firefighters such as Rekka.

There are also romantic undertones between them. Tamaki Kotatsu becomes increasingly conscious of Shinra Kusakabe in ways that extend beyond ordinary teammate interaction, although much of their relationship remains filtered through embarrassment and rivalry.

Rekka Hoshimiya is Tamaki's former superior in Company 1 and a formative figure in her development. Tamaki Kotatsu originally admires Rekka Hoshimiya's enthusiasm and sees him as an exemplary Fire Soldier.

[That admiration collapses when Tamaki Kotatsu discovers that Rekka Hoshimiya is working with the White-Clad and deliberately exposing children to Infernal Bugs. Rekka responds by attacking her rather than attempting to preserve their relationship.](#spoiler)

Karim Flam is another Company 1 officer connected to Tamaki's early career. Tamaki Kotatsu retains considerably more legitimate professional respect for Karim Flam, particularly after the investigation into Rekka reveals who within Company 1 can actually be trusted.

Leonard Burns is the captain under whom Tamaki originally serves. Tamaki Kotatsu occupies a comparatively junior position beneath Leonard Burns and initially understands Company 1 through the authority structure he represents.

Her later experiences with Company 8 broaden her understanding of how dramatically Fire Force companies can differ from one another in culture and purpose.

Akitaru Oubi becomes Tamaki's supervising captain during her assignment to Company 8. Tamaki Kotatsu finds in Akitaru Oubi a form of leadership very different from the betrayal she experienced with Rekka.

Oubi expects improvement without exploiting her insecurity. Akitaru Oubi treats Tamaki Kotatsu as a Fire Soldier capable of growth rather than reducing her to either her mistakes or the embarrassing accidents surrounding her.

Takehisa Hinawa imposes Company 8's stricter professional standards on her. Tamaki Kotatsu receives little special treatment from Takehisa Hinawa, who expects discipline regardless of whether she originally came from Company 1.

Maki Oze becomes one of Tamaki's principal female senior teammates. Tamaki Kotatsu can rely on Maki Oze's combat experience while also seeing an example of a woman whose physical ability ranks among the best in Company 8.

Maki's presence becomes particularly relevant to Tamaki's dissatisfaction with her own strength. Tamaki Kotatsu cannot dismiss Maki Oze's competence as an exceptional male advantage; she sees directly that disciplined training can produce enormous improvement.

Iris becomes an especially important companion as Tamaki begins training in religious duties. Tamaki Kotatsu and Iris develop a warm friendship within Company 8, strengthened by the fact that Iris understands the sisterhood responsibilities Tamaki is beginning to learn.

The two also share the unusual experience of entering frontline environments where spiritual responsibilities remain important alongside combat. Tamaki Kotatsu's ability means she can defend herself far more effectively than Iris, but her religious training gives them a role in common.

Arthur Boyle is another young combatant around Tamaki. Tamaki Kotatsu frequently finds Arthur Boyle's behavior strange, but his enormous fighting ability establishes another standard against which she can measure herself.

Vulcan Joseph becomes one of the engineers supporting Tamaki's expanded Company 8 environment. Tamaki Kotatsu has less direct dependence on Vulcan Joseph's technology than Arthur or Maki, because Nekomata is primarily body-centered rather than equipment-based.

Benimaru Shinmon becomes one of the most important figures in Tamaki's development as a fighter. Tamaki Kotatsu seeks stronger training because repeated failures have convinced her that remaining at her current level is unacceptable.

Benimaru Shinmon does not simply provide encouragement. His training forces Tamaki Kotatsu to confront pain, fear and physical limitations directly.

This relationship gives Tamaki an instructor who treats becoming stronger as a technical problem rather than an emotional reassurance exercise. Her later advances in Nekomata emerge from that process.

Hinata and Hikage, the twin girls associated with Asakusa, become important during Tamaki's training. Their considerable combat ability despite their young age provides an intentionally humiliating benchmark for her.

Rather than remaining discouraged, Tamaki Kotatsu eventually uses the experience as motivation. Training beside fighters who appear physically smaller but possess better fundamentals reinforces that strength can be developed through technique.

Assault becomes one of Tamaki's recurring White-Clad opponents. Tamaki Kotatsu's first encounter with Assault demonstrates the large gap between her abilities and those of a specialized White-Clad combatant.

Their peculiar subsequent encounters repeatedly intersect with Tamaki's Lucky Lecher Lure, undermining Assault's ability to maintain concentration around her.

Tamaki first enters Fire Force through Company 1, providing an early perspective on a Fire Force company other than Company 8. Her status as a rookie also places her closer in experience to Shinra and Arthur than to veteran captains and lieutenants.

The Rekka investigation transforms her from a supporting Company 1 soldier into a character personally connected to the White-Clad conspiracy.

Her discovery of Rekka's experiments reveals that someone inside one of the supposedly trustworthy Fire Force companies has been manufacturing Infernal incidents in search of an Adolla Burst. Tamaki becomes both witness and victim of that revelation.

Shinra's intervention saves her, but the scene establishes a problem that continues through much of Tamaki's development: she does not want her role in dangerous situations to consist primarily of waiting for someone stronger to arrive.

Her disciplinary placement with Company 8 provides the environment in which that problem can be addressed. Official anime material directly identifies the Rekka incident as the reason she comes under Company 8's supervision.

From that point, Tamaki participates in investigations and conflicts involving the White-Clad while gradually becoming integrated into Company 8's social structure.

Her training as a sister creates another dimension to her role. Tamaki is not simply developing as a stronger Third Generation fighter; she is also learning how Fire Force personnel provide dignity to Infernal victims.

The Nether and later White-Clad conflicts repeatedly expose her physical shortcomings. More experienced enemies can overwhelm Nekomata before Tamaki has time to translate determination into effective action.

Those failures become increasingly difficult for her to accept. Rather than remaining comfortable as the weakest major combatant around Company 8, she actively seeks the training necessary to change.

Her work with Benimaru and the Asakusa fighters becomes the clearest transition. Tamaki begins building genuine physical technique rather than relying only on the existence of a Third Generation ability.

The resulting improvement allows her to participate more independently in later confrontations. Her progression is deliberately incremental compared with characters such as Shinra and Arthur, whose abilities develop toward extraordinary supernatural extremes.

During the final Cataclysm, Tamaki's role also becomes connected to the bizarre phenomenon surrounding the Lucky Lecher Lure. What had appeared to be a recurring sequence of impossible accidents is reframed within a world increasingly governed by collective human perception and desire.

Tamaki's confrontation with Assault and her participation in the final battles therefore combine her improved Nekomata with the strange metaphysical rules produced by Adolla.

Tamaki's development begins with humiliation rather than victory. Her earliest major personal conflict leaves her deceived by someone she admired, physically overpowered and dependent on Shinra to survive.

That experience damages her confidence but also gives her a concrete reason to reconsider what being a Fire Soldier requires.

At first, Tamaki's strength is largely potential. Nekomata is a useful Third Generation ability, but she lacks the experience and physical foundation necessary to exploit it consistently.

Company 8 surrounds her with people who make that gap impossible to ignore. Shinra possesses extraordinary propulsion, Arthur has exceptional sword instincts, Maki is physically overwhelming, and Hinawa brings professional military discipline.

Tamaki initially responds to comparisons defensively. She wants to prove that she can contribute but becomes frustrated when determination does not produce immediate results.

The transition occurs when she begins accepting training specifically because she knows she is weak. That acknowledgement differs from giving up; it removes the need to pretend she already possesses abilities she has not yet developed.

Benimaru's training becomes especially important because it does not protect Tamaki's pride. She is challenged by opponents who can expose every technical weakness and force her to adapt.

Her growing ability to use Hysterical Strength and strengthened Nekomata marks the physical result, but the psychological change is equally important. Tamaki becomes less dependent on external confirmation that she deserves to stand beside stronger Fire Soldiers.

She also stops treating every rescue as evidence of personal failure. Company 8 operates through cooperation, and accepting help does not prevent her from developing enough strength to return that help later.

Her sister training reflects another side of the same development. Tamaki's value does not have to come exclusively from winning fights. Giving Infernals respectful final rites and supporting civilians remain legitimate parts of Fire Force service.

The final Cataclysm pushes the strange sexualized accidents surrounding Tamaki into the story's metaphysical framework. The phenomenon becomes linked to human perception and desire rather than remaining merely a sequence of improbable physical mishaps.

By that stage, however, Tamaki is no longer defined solely by what happens to her. She has deliberately trained her body and Nekomata, confronted dangerous enemies and established her own reasons for continuing as a Fire Soldier.

Tamaki's Japanese name is written 環 古達.

The given name Tamaki uses the kanji 環, which can mean a ring, circle or something that surrounds or encircles.

Her surname Kotatsu is written 古達 in the series. This spelling differs from the common Japanese word kotatsu (炬燵), the heated table widely associated with winter household life in Japan.

The spoken surname nevertheless strongly evokes the ordinary word "kotatsu." That association is particularly appropriate in a series where names frequently contain jokes or references related to heat and fire.

Her ignition ability, Nekomata, derives from the supernatural cat of Japanese folklore. Nekomata are traditionally depicted as cats with forked or multiple tails, directly reflected by Tamaki's twin flame tails.
