Mari Kusakabe

Mari is remembered as a loving and supportive mother. She responds warmly to Shinra Kusakabe's dream of becoming a hero and gives him an emotional foundation that continues shaping his decisions years later.

Her treatment of Shinra is particularly important because his involuntary grin often causes other people to misunderstand him. Mari knows her son's character beneath that expression and accepts his desire to protect others.

She is equally devoted to Shō Kusakabe, who is still an infant when the family fire occurs. Shinra's memories of Mari caring for Shō become crucial evidence as he attempts to reconstruct what happened that night.

Mari is not initially presented as a Fire Soldier or trained combatant. Her significance instead comes from the extraordinary Adolla phenomena surrounding the Kusakabe family.

During the house fire, Mari undergoes Infernalization and becomes a horned Demon Infernal. Unlike ordinary Infernals, she retains a profound connection to her children, and her actions during the incident are motivated by protecting the infant Shō rather than attacking him.

Her Demon form possesses tremendous physical power and durability consistent with exceptionally powerful Infernals. She later remains within Adolla, where Shō is able to encounter her through an Adolla Link.

Late revelations connect Mari much more deeply to Adolla: she is the Evangelist's Doppelgänger, making her existence part of the metaphysical relationship between humanity's perception and the beings reflected through Adolla.

Mari appears first through Shinra's memories of the Kusakabe family fire. Shinra remembers his mother and infant brother disappearing during the disaster, while official accounts leave him believing that both were lost.

As Shinra investigates the White-Clad, evidence begins contradicting his childhood understanding. Discovering that Shō survived forces him to reconsider what he saw and why the fire occurred.

Shinra eventually learns that Mari became the horned Demon Infernal he saw during the fire. Rather than murdering Shō, she attempted to protect him while Charon and Haumea carried out the White-Clad operation to take the infant Pillar.

Shō later reaches Mari through an Adolla Link and learns further details concerning his birth and the Kusakabe family. These revelations become decisive in breaking his remaining attachment to the Evangelist's faction.

Shinra Kusakabe is Mari's elder son. She encourages his childhood dream of becoming a hero, and his memories of her remain one of his strongest motivations throughout his life.

Shō Kusakabe is Mari's younger son. She transforms during the fire surrounding his awakening as an Adolla Burst user but retains enough maternal instinct to try to protect him.

Haumea and Charon are involved in the White-Clad operation surrounding the Kusakabe house fire and infant Shō.

The Evangelist has a profound metaphysical connection to Mari. Mari is revealed to be the Evangelist's Doppelgänger, linking the Kusakabe family directly to one of the deepest mysteries of Adolla.
