Ryouta Miyagi

Miyagi is confident, confrontational, and extremely conscious of how others perceive him. Remarks about his short stature can immediately provoke him, and his willingness to fight contributes to his reputation as one of Shohoku's "problem children." His early conflict with Hisashi Mitsui becomes violent enough to leave both students hospitalized.

Around Ayako, that abrasive exterior changes considerably. Miyagi is devoted to her and responds strongly to her encouragement, often treating even small signs of approval as motivation. His feelings are frequently played for comedy, but his respect for her is genuine and persists throughout the story.

On the court, Miyagi is more disciplined than his off-court behavior suggests. A point guard must make rapid decisions while coordinating four teammates, and Miyagi embraces that responsibility. Against intimidating opponents, he may feel pressure or frustration, but he generally recovers by relying on speed and competitive confidence.

Miyagi's defining weapon is speed. His low center of gravity, acceleration, and quick changes of direction make him difficult for larger defenders to contain. Rather than attempting to overpower taller guards, he attacks gaps, penetrates defensive formations, and uses his mobility to initiate Shohoku's fast breaks. Official material describes him as Shohoku's "Speedster."

He is an accomplished ball-handler and passer with the court awareness expected of a starting point guard. His ability to advance the ball rapidly is particularly valuable beside Kaede Rukawa and Hanamichi Sakuragi, whose athleticism allows Shohoku to turn defensive stops into immediate offensive pressure.

Miyagi can score himself when defenders concede space, but facilitating the offense remains his primary function. His limitations are largely physical: at 168 cm and 59 kg, he regularly faces guards with significant height and reach advantages. His effectiveness therefore depends on preventing opponents from turning those disadvantages into a slow, physical matchup.

Miyagi is introduced after an extended absence from school following his fight with Mitsui's group. His return initially adds another volatile personality to Shohoku, particularly because he and Sakuragi quickly misunderstand each other over their respective romantic frustrations. Once they recognize their similar circumstances, they become unexpectedly compatible.

His return gives Shohoku the natural point guard it needs. With Miyagi directing possession, Mitsui providing perimeter shooting, Rukawa creating offense, Sakuragi developing as a rebounder, and Takenori Akagi controlling the interior, Shohoku's eventual starting five takes shape.

In The First Slam Dunk, Miyagi becomes the principal viewpoint character and receives an expanded personal history not presented in the original manga at comparable depth. The film reveals his childhood in Okinawa, the enormous influence of his older brother Sota, Sota's death, and the grief carried by Ryouta, his sister Anna, and their mother Kaoru. This material reframes his confidence as something developed alongside fear, bereavement, and the pressure of following an admired older brother.

Ayako is Shohoku's manager and the object of Miyagi's longstanding affection. He openly pursues her, and her encouragement can dramatically restore his confidence during games.

Hanamichi Sakuragi initially clashes with Miyagi before the two discover that they are both struggling with unrequited love. Their friendship quickly becomes one of Shohoku's most energetic partnerships.

Hisashi Mitsui has a violent history with Miyagi before returning to basketball. Despite that beginning, they eventually become teammates whose contrasting skills—Miyagi's penetration and Mitsui's outside shooting—fit naturally together.

Takenori Akagi is Miyagi's captain and the stabilizing authority over Shohoku's more unruly players. Kaede Rukawa is one of Miyagi's most important offensive targets, particularly in transition.

Anzai is the coach Miyagi respects and one of the reasons he is drawn to Shohoku.

Sota Miyagi is Ryouta's late older brother, an accomplished young basketball player whose example profoundly shapes Ryouta's relationship with the sport. Kaoru Miyagi is his mother, while Anna Miyagi is his younger sister.
