Sota Miyagi

Sota is energetic, confident and affectionate toward his younger brother. He enjoys teasing Ryota but also takes his development seriously, challenging him rather than treating him as too young to participate.

Basketball comes naturally to Sota, and he carries himself with the assurance of a gifted young player. Ryota sees that confidence and attempts to imitate it, even when he cannot yet match his brother physically or technically.

Sota also takes responsibility within his family. His presence gives Ryota both a brother and an aspirational figure, which makes their connection unusually important to Ryota's identity.

Sota is a talented young basketball player who teaches Ryota fundamentals and competes with him in one-on-one games. His ability earns admiration from Ryota long before the younger brother develops into an accomplished player himself.

He plays point guard and introduces Ryota to the mentality associated with the position: handling pressure, controlling the ball and facing larger opponents without backing down.

Because his story is presented primarily through Ryota's childhood memories, his full competitive ceiling is never established.

Sota appears through the expanded Miyagi family story in The First Slam Dunk. His games with Ryota establish basketball as something inseparable from Ryota's childhood and family identity.

Sota dies in an accident at sea while Ryota is still young. The loss devastates the Miyagi family and leaves Ryota carrying both grief and the pressure of feeling that he must somehow fill his older brother's place.

Ryota continues playing basketball partly through the connection it gives him to Sota. His eventual appearance against Sannoh — the team Sota once spoke about wanting to challenge — gives that childhood dream a new meaning.

Ryota Miyagi is Sota's younger brother, student and frequent basketball opponent. Sota's example profoundly shapes Ryota's playing style and ambitions.

Kaoru Miyagi is Sota's mother. His loss becomes one of the defining sources of grief within her relationship with Ryota.
