Anna Miyagi

Anna is cheerful, affectionate and comparatively open about subjects that Ryota and Kaoru find difficult to discuss. She retains a youthful directness and is willing to say things that the other members of her family leave unspoken.

She is also perceptive about the emotional distance between her mother and brother. Rather than becoming withdrawn herself, Anna often acts naturally around both of them and helps keep communication within the household from disappearing altogether.

Her perspective differs partly because of her age. Events that left powerful memories for Ryota occurred when Anna was much younger, allowing her to approach the family's past with less of the guilt and emotional conflict carried by her older brother.

Anna is not portrayed as a competitive basketball player, and The First Slam Dunk does not establish specialized athletic abilities for her.

Her role is primarily within the Miyagi family narrative. She observes Ryota's basketball career from outside the court and provides an everyday family perspective on a brother whose confidence during games conceals considerable emotional pressure.

Anna was created for the expanded Miyagi family story presented in The First Slam Dunk. Through flashbacks, the film establishes her as the youngest of three siblings, following Sota Miyagi and Ryota.

The Miyagi family loses its father while the children are young, and Sota later dies in a boating accident. Anna is still very young during these losses and consequently retains fewer direct memories of them than Ryota.

After the family moves from Okinawa to Kanagawa, Anna grows up watching the unresolved grief surrounding Ryota and Kaoru. She frequently occupies the space between them when their inability to discuss Sota creates tension.

Anna eventually suggests placing Sota's photograph alongside the family's other photographs, a simple proposal that reflects her greater willingness to acknowledge him openly rather than avoiding the painful subject.

Ryota Miyagi is Anna's older brother. She cares about him and observes the difficult relationship that develops between him and their mother as he pursues basketball.

Sota Miyagi is Anna's eldest brother. Because Anna was very young when Sota died, her memories of him are less developed than Ryota's, allowing her to discuss him more openly later in life.

Kaoru Miyagi is Anna's mother. Anna remains close to her while also acting as an informal bridge between Kaoru and Ryota Miyagi when grief makes communication between them difficult.
