Slam Dunk

Takenori Akagi

赤木剛憲

Story Role

Akagi begins as Shohoku's uncompromising captain and Haruko's older brother. Sakuragi immediately antagonizes him, gives him the nickname "Gori," and even challenges him despite knowing almost nothing about basketball.

Recognizing Sakuragi's athletic potential, Akagi gradually teaches him the fundamentals needed to contribute. Their relationship remains combative, but Akagi's instruction in rebounding becomes particularly important to Sakuragi's transformation into a useful player.

The arrival and return of Rukawa, Miyagi, and Mitsui finally give Akagi teammates capable of pursuing his national ambitions. During the Kanagawa tournament, he battles rival centers while carrying the expectations he has accumulated over three years.

At the national tournament, Akagi faces Sannoh center Masashi Kawata and is initially consumed by the desire to prove himself individually. He eventually recognizes that Shohoku does not need him to defeat Kawata alone; it needs him to perform his role within the team. Shohoku's victory over Sannoh finally gives Akagi the national-stage achievement he had pursued throughout high school.
