Nojiko

Nojiko is composed, perceptive and protective. As a child she understands the family’s poverty more readily than Nami and tries to mediate disputes without denying her sister’s frustration.

She trusts Nami even when the village pretends to despise her. Nojiko recognizes that openly revealing this trust would make it harder for Nami to leave if the plan to buy the village’s freedom ever succeeded.

Her loyalty is practical rather than sentimental. She confronts danger, helps rescue Luffy and accepts that Nami must eventually leave Cocoyasi Village to pursue her own life.

Nojiko has no established supernatural abilities or formal combat style. She is physically resilient, surviving a gunshot from Nezumi while attempting to stop the corrupt Marine from provoking Nami.

She is a capable farmer and helps care for Bellemere’s tangerine grove. Her familiarity with Cocoyasi Village and Arlong’s occupation makes her an important source of information during the Straw Hats’ confrontation with the Arlong Pirates.

Nojiko also assists Genzo in freeing Monkey D. Luffy after he is thrown into the sea with his feet trapped in stone. She keeps his head above water while Genzo works to break the obstruction.

Nojiko is introduced when Nami returns to Cocoyasi Village after taking the Going Merry. When Usopp, Sanji and Johnny pursue her, Nojiko explains how Arlong took control of the village and forced Nami to draw maps.

She recounts Bellemere’s adoption of the two girls and her murder after she uses all her money to acknowledge them as her daughters. The account establishes why Nami has spent eight years accumulating 100,000,000 berries to purchase the village’s freedom.

After Nezumi confiscates Nami’s savings on Arlong’s instructions, Nojiko tries to prevent her sister from attacking the Marines and is shot. She later helps save Luffy during the battle at Arlong Park and celebrates the village’s liberation.

Nojiko remains in Cocoyasi Village and tends the tangerine farm. She follows Nami’s career through newspapers and wanted posters, taking reassurance from seeing her sister smile.

Nami is Nojiko’s adoptive younger sister and closest relationship. Nojiko tattoos her arm in solidarity after Arlong brands Nami with his crew’s mark, ensuring that Nami is not the only visibly marked person in the family.

Bellemere is their adoptive mother. Nojiko remembers the battlefield where they met and supports Bellemere’s decision to raise both children despite their lack of money.

Genzo becomes a guardian to Nojiko and Nami after Bellemere’s death. He shares Nojiko’s awareness of Nami’s plan and participates with the villagers in the pretense that they do not understand her motives.

Arlong controls every aspect of Nojiko’s youth, while Nezumi enforces his scheme through corrupt Marine authority. The Straw Hats’ intervention allows Nojiko to see Nami rely openly on friends for the first time.
