Genzo

Genzo is stern, protective, and deeply community-minded. He is willing to admonish Bellemere over her limited resources, but his criticism comes from concern for the family rather than disapproval of their unconventional household. Around Nami and Nojiko, his severity regularly gives way to affection.

During Arlong’s occupation, Genzo balances open resistance with an understanding of Nami’s secret plan. The villagers pretend not to know why she joined the Arlong Pirates because revealing their knowledge might pressure her into continuing for their sake. Genzo accepts the painful deception while remaining prepared to fight when Arlong’s betrayal makes peaceful liberation impossible.

His concern for Nami persists after the village is freed. Rather than treating her departure as abandonment, he entrusts her future to the Straw Hats while making clear that her happiness remains the village’s priority.

Genzo has no superhuman powers. He possesses the practical combat ability expected of a local police officer and is willing to wield weapons against pirates, but he cannot match the physical strength of Arlong’s officers.

His most important strength is moral leadership. Genzo helps organize Cocoyasi Village, protects its residents when possible, and sustains communal resistance through years of occupation. The scars covering his body testify to his attempt to oppose the Arlong Pirates despite the disparity in power.

Genzo is present during Nami and Nojiko’s early life with Bellemere, acting as a trusted family friend. When Arlong invades, Genzo tries to resist and is severely wounded by Kuroobi. He survives to witness Bellemere’s death and Nami’s forced recruitment.

Years later, Genzo and the other villagers learn that Nami has been gathering money to purchase their freedom. They conceal that knowledge so she can abandon the burden if it becomes unbearable. Once Arlong arranges the seizure of her savings, Genzo leads the villagers toward Arlong Park despite knowing they are unlikely to survive.

The Straw Hats intervene before the villagers can sacrifice themselves. After Arlong’s defeat, Genzo gives Monkey D. Luffy a severe warning to protect Nami’s smile. Nami’s later pinwheel-and-orange tattoo honors both Genzo and Bellemere.

Nami regards Genzo as a parental figure and trusted link to her home. Genzo supports her throughout childhood, understands the burden she carries under Arlong, and accepts her decision to sail so long as she remains happy.

Nojiko shares Genzo’s concern for Nami and helps preserve the truth about the village’s knowledge of Nami’s plan. Bellemere is Genzo’s close friend and neighbor; he respects her devotion to her daughters even when he worries about the family’s poverty.

Arlong is Genzo’s occupier and enemy, while Kuroobi inflicts the wounds that leave Genzo permanently scarred. Monkey D. Luffy earns Genzo’s gratitude by liberating the village, though Genzo frames that gratitude as a lasting responsibility to protect Nami.
