Miharu was born into the Kiryuu family, a vampire clan whose members traditionally work as exorcists. His father, Masumi, serves as the family head and operates from a church in the secluded village of Kanhachiya. Although the clan’s vampiric traits had weakened over successive generations, Miharu was born with an unusually powerful need to absorb life energy.

His hunger emerged around the age of ten. At first, Miharu secretly drew small quantities of energy from friends through physical contact, but his requirements increased as he grew older. Afraid that prolonged contact would harm them, he began avoiding other children and eventually isolated himself. Masumi became his principal source of nourishment, and repeated draining caused his father to appear far older than his actual age.

Miharu reduced his daytime activity to conserve energy and considered abandoning plans to attend high school. His circumstances changed after meeting Morihito Otogi and the other residents of the Otogi household. Because supernatural familiars possess abundant vitality and recover it more readily than ordinary humans, Morihito offered to share energy with him. Miharu consequently moved into the household and entered a formal familiar contract with Nico.

Miharu presents himself as refined, calm, and courteous. He speaks in a controlled manner and often appears more composed than the older teenagers around him. His upbringing in an exorcist family has also made him knowledgeable about supernatural customs, allowing him to offer practical explanations when the household encounters unfamiliar phenomena.

His politeness does not prevent him from making blunt or insensitive observations. Miharu frequently says exactly what he thinks without recognizing that the subject may embarrass or disturb someone else. He has a pronounced fondness for macabre imagery, physical injuries, and grotesque stories, which contrasts with his delicate appearance.

Years of self-imposed isolation make Miharu cautious about intimacy. He does not resent being a vampire, but he understands that careless use of his ability can weaken an ordinary person. Joining the Otogi household gradually reduces this anxiety, since its residents voluntarily provide him with manageable amounts of energy.

As the youngest regular resident, Miharu sometimes enjoys being looked after by the others and can behave in a mildly spoiled fashion. When Nico is transformed into a small child and becomes the household’s primary concern, he briefly feels displaced by the attention she receives. He nevertheless adapts quickly and assumes responsibility for helping care for her.

Miharu is a slight, androgynous boy with cream-colored hair, blue eyes, and finely drawn facial features. At 157 cm and 46 kg, he is shorter and lighter than most of the older male residents of the Otogi household. His appearance is feminine enough that strangers occasionally mistake him for a girl.

He favors neat, fashionable clothing with a restrained or chic style. Because direct sunlight affects him adversely, he commonly carries a dark parasol outdoors. The parasol is both a practical necessity and a defining part of his silhouette.

Miharu’s composed expressions reinforce the initial impression that he is gentle and reserved. That image often breaks when he becomes animated by a gruesome subject or delivers an unexpectedly tactless remark.

Magic can temporarily transform him into a female form called Miharun. This form retains his recognizable features while giving him longer hair and a more overtly feminine appearance.

Miharu possesses the strongest vampiric traits seen within the modern Kiryuu family. Unlike traditional blood-drinking vampires, his lineage has evolved to absorb vitality directly through the skin. Physical contact allows him to draw energy from humans, supernatural familiars, and other magical beings.

Absorbed vitality repairs his body, giving him exceptional regenerative ability. Injuries that would incapacitate an ordinary human can be rapidly healed once he obtains sufficient energy. This recovery makes him extremely difficult to defeat through conventional physical damage, although it depends on access to an energy source.

Draining can transmit impressions from the target to Miharu. He may perceive emotions, thoughts, or memories carried within the absorbed energy, and he can identify someone whose vitality he has previously sampled. These effects make the ability useful for investigation as well as nourishment.

His power can also remove magical energy from witches and warlocks. In combination with Nico’s magic, Miharu is capable of extracting hostile power without necessarily killing its owner. This becomes an important means of neutralizing warlocks and separating them from the magic that drives their attacks.

Miharu shares the traditional vampire weakness to sunlight. He protects himself with a parasol and limits unnecessary daytime exertion, as activity increases his need for life energy. His parasol is reinforced for exorcist work and can be wielded like a sword when necessary.

• Drain — Miharu absorbs vitality through direct physical contact. The stolen energy feeds him, restores injuries, and may carry the target’s emotions, thoughts, or memories.

• Life-Energy Recognition — After draining a person, Miharu can recognize that individual through the distinctive quality of their vitality. This is an application of Drain rather than a separate supernatural sense.

• Magic Drain — Miharu directs his vampiric absorption toward magical power instead of ordinary vitality. The technique can weaken or depower a witch or warlock, particularly when supported by Nico’s healing magic.

• Twilight Rose — A special rose passed down through generations of the Kiryuu family. It absorbs life energy or magical power and allows Miharu to extend the principles of his Drain ability through a prepared exorcist tool.

Masumi Kiryuu — Miharu’s father, the head of the Kiryuu vampire family, and an experienced exorcist. Masumi supports his son without resentment and allows Miharu to feed from him, although the repeated loss of vitality leaves him prematurely aged.

Nico Wakatsuki — Miharu contracts with Nico as one of her familiars and lives under the same roof. His ability complements her healing magic, allowing the pair to remove dangerous power from enemies while limiting permanent harm. After Nico is reduced to childhood, Miharu helps protect and raise her despite briefly feeling jealous of the attention she receives.

Morihito Otogi — Miharu admires Morihito as an older-brother figure and respects his strength and discipline. Morihito’s willingness to share his abundant ogre vitality gives Miharu a practical alternative to draining ordinary humans and makes his move to the city possible.

Kanshi Kazamatsuri — Kanshi is one of Miharu’s fellow familiars and housemates. Their contrasting personalities generate frequent comedy: Miharu’s composed bluntness often cuts through Kanshi’s noisy explanations, while Kanshi is sometimes tasked with helping him navigate ordinary city life.

Keigo Magami — Keigo shares the Otogi household with Miharu as Nico’s werewolf familiar. Miharu can safely draw on his supernatural vitality, and both participate in the household’s battles and protective duties.

Nemu Miyao — Nemu is a witch and frequent ally of the household. Miharu knows her supernatural identity and works alongside her during incidents involving witches, familiars, and threats to Nico.

Ban Hyo — Ban later becomes another resident and familiar within Nico’s expanding household. Miharu shares protective responsibilities with him and the other supernatural retainers.

Rabuka — Rabuka calls Miharu “Vamp,” an abbreviated reference to his species. Their encounters place Miharu’s draining ability against hostile magic and demonstrate its value as a nonlethal method of disabling supernatural opponents.

Jekyll, Furan, and Aika — Miharu serves with these students on the Asunaro High School student council. The group gives him a social identity beyond the Otogi household and helps integrate him into ordinary school life.

Miharu enters the story when the Otogi household travels to the region where his family lives. The visit introduces the Kiryuu clan’s version of vampirism and reveals how severely Miharu’s energy requirements have restricted his life. His situation initially appears incompatible with ordinary schooling because prolonged reliance on Masumi is unsustainable.

Morihito resolves the immediate problem by recognizing that the household’s supernatural familiars can replenish the energy Miharu needs. Miharu moves to the city, joins Nico’s circle of protectors, and becomes the fourth major familiar living in the Otogi home. His arrival expands the household’s abilities beyond direct combat by adding regeneration, spiritual investigation, and magical extraction.

At Asunaro High School, Miharu becomes unexpectedly popular. His elegant appearance and courteous bearing make social integration easier than he anticipated, though his blunt remarks and morbid interests repeatedly disrupt the refined image others form of him. He eventually joins the student council and develops relationships independent of his role as a familiar.

During later conflicts, Miharu’s power acquires strategic importance. By combining Drain with Nico’s healing abilities, he helps strip warlocks of hostile magic without requiring their deaths. This makes him central to the group’s attempts to defeat enemies while preserving the possibility of rehabilitation.

Miharu’s early life is defined by avoidance. He limits physical contact, withdraws from friends, and considers sacrificing his education because he believes isolation is the safest way to protect others. His restraint is compassionate, but it also prevents him from forming the relationships that could provide a healthier solution.

Moving into the Otogi household teaches him to accept voluntary support. Morihito, Kanshi, Keigo, and the other familiars do not treat his hunger as shameful or monstrous; they regard sharing their recoverable energy as an ordinary household responsibility. This gives Miharu greater control over his condition and allows him to interact confidently with human classmates.

His role also develops from recipient to caretaker. He first enters the household because he needs its residents’ vitality, but he increasingly uses his abilities to protect them, investigate magical threats, and neutralize enemies. When Nico loses her adolescent form and memories, Miharu remains with the group and helps sustain the new family structure built around her recovery.

Miharu does not lose his vanity, morbid curiosity, or tendency to speak without tact. His growth instead lies in becoming more socially engaged and dependable while retaining the peculiarities that distinguish him.

Miharu’s surname, Kiryuu, is written 霧生. The first character, 霧, means “fog” or “mist,” while 生 carries meanings associated with life, birth, or living. The name therefore combines imagery of obscurity with the life energy on which his vampiric ability depends.

His given name is written 見晴. Its characters relate to seeing and clear conditions or an unobstructed view. This creates a contrast with the mist imagery in his surname, although the series does not provide a formal in-story explanation for the full name.

Miharu’s female form, Miharun, has a separate vocal performance in the anime. Manaka Iwami voices the form in Japanese, while Lisa Reimold provides its English voice.

Miharu ranked sixth in the official popularity poll held for the manga’s second anniversary, receiving 5,349 votes. The result placed him among the series’ most popular supporting characters despite his introduction occurring after the original central household had already been established.

His episodes in the anime emphasized the contrast between his refined design and tactless, macabre dialogue. Official merchandise produced following the adaptation includes character stands and other goods featuring his anime appearance.
