Personality
Personality
Nemu is shy, reserved, knowledgeable, and initially poor at expressing her true feelings. Her upbringing emphasizes magical discipline and proper behavior, leaving her far more comfortable discussing witchcraft than navigating ordinary teenage friendships. She often suppresses what she actually wants to say rather than risk embarrassment.
Her cat transformation allows her to behave with fewer inhibitions. She can visit the Otogi home and observe its residents without facing the social pressure she experiences in human form, although the arrangement becomes increasingly complicated as she grows emotionally attached to the people she originally intended merely to evaluate.
Nico's friendship gradually draws Nemu into a wider social circle. Spending time with Morihito, Kanshi, Keigo, Miharu, and the others gives her practical experience with friendship that her isolated magical upbringing did not provide. She becomes more willing to voice opinions, admit insecurities, and offer support.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Nemu specializes in shape-shifting magic, a discipline inherited and developed through her witch training. Her signature transformation is a black cat, allowing her to move inconspicuously through ordinary environments and approach people without revealing her identity.
The transformation has limitations. Falling asleep causes Nemu to revert to her human body, creating obvious risks whenever she remains in cat form for extended periods. Her transformations therefore require both concentration and awareness of her physical condition.
Nemu's magical education extends beyond transformation itself. Coming from an established witch family, she has extensive knowledge of magical rules, rare spells, familiars, and supernatural customs. This theoretical expertise allows her to identify magical phenomena that Nico and the familiars do not immediately understand.
Nemu becomes increasingly willing to use her abilities in cooperation with the Otogi household rather than merely for observation. Her knowledge also proves important in recognizing the accidental magical condition affecting Nico and Morihito's relationship.
Story Role
Story Role
Nemu enters the story as a mysterious cat repeatedly appearing around Morihito. Her original interest is practical: as a witch expected to choose a familiar, she sees the disciplined and powerful ogre descendant as an ideal candidate.
Her position changes after she learns how deeply Nico loves Morihito. Rather than aggressively pursuing him as a familiar, Nemu begins distancing herself and becomes more invested in friendship with Nico and the household. Her eventual willingness to appear before them as herself marks an important step beyond the social isolation in which she was raised.
The conflict involving Keigo and Wolf draws Nemu further into the group's supernatural affairs. Because her abilities and personality allow her to interact differently with Wolf than most characters can, she becomes increasingly connected to both sides of Keigo's identity.
Nemu later identifies that Nico unintentionally placed a childhood spell on Morihito that suppresses his romantic feelings toward her. This discovery reframes a relationship Nemu has observed from close range and demonstrates the value of her unusually strong magical education.
Relationships
Relationships
Nico Wakatsuki becomes one of Nemu's first genuine friends. Nico's openness helps Nemu move beyond the emotional restraint encouraged by her upbringing, while Nemu contributes deeper formal knowledge of witchcraft.
Morihito Otogi initially attracts Nemu because she regards his ogre abilities and responsible temperament as ideal qualities in a familiar. She repeatedly visits him in cat form before becoming more comfortable approaching the household as herself.
Maya Miyao is Nemu's mother and an important influence on her magical education and restrained behavior.
Keigo Magami becomes increasingly close to Nemu because both struggle with feelings of inadequacy. She helps him work with magical abilities, while he listens seriously to her insecurities. Their mutual attachment gradually develops romantic dimensions.
Wolf initially interacts with Nemu through the arrangement surrounding his transformations. Their repeated encounters produce a separate bond from her relationship with Keigo, and Wolf eventually expresses his own attraction toward her.
Kanshi Kazamatsuri is a friend through the Otogi household and treats Nemu as part of the group's regular social circle.
Miharu Kiryu shares Nemu's greater-than-average knowledge of the supernatural world, while Ban later becomes another female supernatural companion within Nico's circle.
