Personality
Personality
Kanshi is sociable, energetic, emotional, and considerably less restrained than Morihito. He speaks with a Kansai dialect and quickly inserts himself into conversations, school activities, money-making schemes, and whatever questionable idea happens to be circulating through the household. His communication skills allow him to form friendships with people who might otherwise remain isolated.
He is strongly motivated by friendship and loyalty. Kanshi's early hostility toward Morihito comes from the history between tengu and ogres rather than personal experience, and direct interaction quickly weakens those prejudices. Once he accepts someone as a friend, he is willing to put himself in danger for them.
Kanshi also has a pronounced foolish streak. He can be greedy, gullible, overly confident, and prone to turning small problems into elaborate disasters. That behavior makes him one of Nico's most natural partners in comedy, but it should not be confused with incompetence. When serious danger appears, his training and tactical understanding become immediately apparent.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
As a tengu, Kanshi specializes in wind magic. He can create and direct powerful air currents for offense, defense, movement, and environmental manipulation. His ceremonial shakujo staff acts as both a weapon and a means of amplifying spiritual power, transforming when properly charged.
Rising Earth, Flowing Sky generates a powerful upward current, while Armor Piercing Gale compresses wind into a concentrated blast capable of striking with much greater force than an ordinary gust. Kanshi can vary the intensity of his wind rather than relying on a single fixed output.
He can also summon crows with Bird-Blackened Sky, communicating with the flock and using them for reconnaissance. Tengu Cloak grants temporary invisibility, though only for a short period. Together these abilities make him more versatile than his loud personality initially suggests: he can scout, conceal himself, attack from range, and control movement around a battlefield.
Later training and conflicts further establish Kanshi as one of the strongest tengu of his generation, placing him in the position of helping move his clan beyond its inherited hostility toward ogres.
Story Role
Story Role
Kanshi enters the story shortly after Nico and Morihito begin living together. He already knows Nico through their supernatural upbringing and is concerned about an ogre serving as her familiar. The traditional antagonism between their races initially turns his meeting with Morihito into a confrontation.
Rather than preserving that hostility, Kanshi eventually accepts Morihito after seeing his character and dedication to Nico. He becomes another of Nico's familiars and moves into the Otogi residence, establishing the shared-household structure that later expands with Keigo and others.
Kanshi frequently occupies the space between the series' supernatural battles and school comedy. His social confidence makes him useful whenever the more reserved members need to interact with unfamiliar people, while his wind magic gives the group a reliable ranged fighter and scout.
Later revelations concerning the older generation show that the conflict between tengu and ogres was never as simple as Kanshi initially believed. His own cooperation with Morihito becomes part of a broader rejection of the resentment inherited from their clans.
Relationships
Relationships
Nico Wakatsuki is Kanshi's childhood friend and the witch he serves as a familiar. He is fiercely protective of her but comfortable enough around her to participate in foolish schemes and ordinary teenage activities.
Morihito Otogi begins as Kanshi's rival because of the historic hostility between tengu and ogres. Their conflict gives way to friendship, mutual training, and genuine confidence in each other's abilities.
Kakuraibo Ashizukayama is Kanshi's father and a powerful tengu leader. His history with Morihito's father reveals that the older generation's relationships were more complicated than the simple clan hatred Kanshi inherited.
Keigo Magami is one of Kanshi's closest household companions. Kanshi regularly drags the quieter Keigo into social events, strange projects, and comedy routines.
Wolf clashes more readily with Kanshi because Wolf's aggressive temperament does not respond well to Kanshi's personality.
Nemu Miyao maintains a friendly relationship with Kanshi and becomes part of the same expanding supernatural circle.
Miharu Kiryu is treated much like a younger brother, though Kanshi frequently exploits Miharu's abilities for whatever plan he currently has in mind.
Ban shares Kanshi's tendency toward laziness, greed, and ill-considered schemes, giving the two a sibling-like dynamic that frequently tests Morihito's patience.
