Personality
Personality
Morihito is serious, calm, practical, and exceptionally conscientious. Where Nico tends to act first and consider magical consequences afterward, Morihito instinctively evaluates risks. He keeps the household functioning, cooks, cleans, maintains routines, and responds to supernatural accidents with the weary competence of someone who has accepted that normality is no longer an option.
He is not humorless. Morihito has highly specific interests, particularly old-fashioned and obscure objects, and can become unexpectedly enthusiastic when something appeals to his tastes. His otherwise restrained behavior makes these moments especially noticeable to his friends. He is also capable of being stubborn and inflexible when convinced that responsibility requires a particular course of action.
Romance is one of his greatest blind spots. Nico's feelings are obvious to most of the people around them, but Morihito initially interprets their relationship primarily through childhood friendship and his obligation as her familiar. It is eventually discovered that Nico accidentally placed a spell on him during childhood that inhibited romantic feelings toward her, helping explain why he could recognize affection in other contexts while remaining strangely unreceptive to hers.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Morihito is descended from ogres and possesses physical capabilities far beyond ordinary humans. His strength allows him to shatter hard materials, overpower supernatural opponents, leap enormous distances, and withstand impacts that would incapacitate ordinary people. Ogre power can be concentrated and released deliberately rather than functioning as uncontrolled brute force.
His combat training is extensive. Morihito practices the Otogi family's ogre fighting methods and uses precise striking techniques designed to direct his supernatural strength efficiently. Unlike Nico's magic, his abilities are predominantly physical, making him the household's principal close-range fighter.
Morihito's discipline is as important as his raw power. Ogre strength can be dangerous if handled carelessly, so he has trained from childhood to control his body and emotions. This makes him particularly effective as Nico's guardian: he can respond quickly without causing unnecessary damage to people around him.
As the conflict surrounding Nico escalates, Morihito continues developing the techniques inherited through the Otogi line and confronting stronger supernatural opponents. His effectiveness increasingly comes from combining ogre power with the abilities of Nico's other familiars rather than trying to solve every battle alone.
Story Role
Story Role
Morihito is living without his father, Reiji Otogi, when Nico returns after years of witch training. Reiji and Nico's mother arrange for Morihito to become her familiar because a prophecy warns that disaster will strike her within a year. The assignment requires Nico to live with him, immediately placing Morihito at the center of her magical life.
He initially bears the protection duty largely alone. The arrival of Kanshi changes that arrangement, followed by Keigo and other supernatural companions who gradually turn the Otogi residence into a communal home. Morihito often functions as the stabilizing figure of this increasingly chaotic household.
His role in the supernatural conflict is complicated by the long-standing tension between ogres and tengu, the history of familiars, and the enemies targeting the Witch of Thousands. Rather than treating inherited rivalries as absolute, Morihito develops trust with people from other supernatural lineages.
Following Nico's transformation into a child, Morihito becomes one of her primary caregivers. The responsibility forces him to protect not merely Nico's life but the ordinary childhood and adolescence she must experience again, giving his role as guardian a much broader meaning.
Relationships
Relationships
Nico Wakatsuki is Morihito's childhood friend, witch, housemate, and the person he is assigned to protect as a familiar. He takes that duty with extreme seriousness. His apparent inability to reciprocate her romantic feelings is eventually linked to an accidental childhood spell Nico placed upon him, rather than simple indifference.
Reiji Otogi is Morihito's father and a fellow ogre descendant. He trained his son and accepts the arrangement making Morihito Nico's protector while working away from home.
Ibuki Wakatsuki is Nico's mother and the witch whose prophecy leads to Morihito's guardianship assignment. She trusts his strength and character enough to place her daughter in his care.
Kanshi Kazamatsuri initially regards Morihito as an enemy because of historical hostility between tengu and ogres. Their rivalry becomes friendship as they fight together, and each develops respect for the other's combat ability.
Keigo Magami becomes Morihito's classmate, housemate, and fellow familiar. Morihito recognizes Keigo's competence even when Keigo himself tends to undervalue it.
Nemu Miyao initially admires Morihito as an exceptionally desirable prospective familiar because of his ogre lineage. She frequently visits him while transformed into a cat before becoming comfortable enough to reveal herself.
Miharu Kiryu joins the household as another supernatural familiar. Morihito frequently assumes a responsible older-brother role toward him.
Ban frustrates Morihito because her laziness clashes directly with his orderly habits. Despite their arguments, both protect one another when necessary.
