Personality
Personality
Nico is cheerful, impulsive, compassionate, and prone to getting carried away. Compliments go directly to her head, and her excitement over a new spell often outruns her consideration of its drawbacks. Her clumsiness frequently turns magic intended to solve a simple problem into a much larger incident. Despite that, her stated ambition is sincere: she wants to become a great witch who uses magic to make other people's lives better.
She is highly social and wears her emotions openly. Nico becomes excited by school events, friendships, romance, and opportunities to demonstrate magic, contrasting sharply with Morihito's restraint. She has been in love with him since childhood and initially assumes that living together will naturally create romantic opportunities, only to discover that Morihito approaches his position as her guardian with almost comically rigid seriousness.
Nico's strongest trait is her instinct to help. She frequently casts spells for classmates without expecting anything in return and is willing to protect people who have caused trouble for her. Her optimism also helps bring otherwise isolated supernatural people together. Kanshi Kazamatsuri, Keigo Magami, Nemu Miyao, and others become part of an increasingly large circle built around her willingness to accept them.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Nico is the Witch of Thousands, an exceptionally rare kind of witch said to appear once every thousand years. Ordinary witches generally specialize in a particular category of magic, whereas Nico can acquire and use a vast variety of unrelated spells. Her repertoire includes transformation, levitation, size alteration, animation, healing and utility magic, among many stranger effects.
Because she knows so many spells, Nico gives them distinctive names to help remember their functions. Flip Flap Flat flattens a target, including living people; Embiggen enlarges objects or, with more precise casting, individual portions of them; Animatey gives objects personalities and brings them to life. Her magic is deliberately broad rather than organized around a single combat discipline, making creativity one of her greatest strengths.
Nico's major weakness is control. Her spells frequently have unexpected conditions, durations, side effects, or interpretations that she fails to consider before casting them. As she gains experience, she becomes better at combining spells and applying apparently frivolous magic to serious situations.
Nico's exceptional magical capacity eventually makes her central to a conflict with warlocks seeking the power of the Witch of Thousands. During the Day of the Disaster, her attempt to use magic against the threat has enormous consequences: she is physically reduced to a five-year-old state and loses the memories and magical development accumulated after that age. The household subsequently spends years raising and teaching her again while searching for a way to restore her.
Story Role
Story Role
Nico returns to Morihito's life after completing her witch training. Her mother, Ibuki Wakatsuki, has received a prophecy that Nico will face a serious calamity within a year, prompting the arrangement that makes Morihito her guardian. Nico moves into the Otogi home and begins attending high school alongside him, where her attempts to use magic helpfully generate much of the series' early supernatural comedy.
The prophecy gradually develops into a genuine conflict. Nico attracts hostile warlocks precisely because the Witch of Thousands possesses capabilities unavailable to ordinary witches. Morihito consequently gains additional allies, beginning with Kanshi and later Keigo, while Nico herself refuses to treat protection as a reason to stop living normally.
Her role also extends beyond being the person everyone protects. Nico's magic repeatedly resolves problems that physical strength cannot, while her willingness to befriend supernatural outsiders creates alliances Morihito alone would never have assembled. Even people initially introduced as threats can become allies after encountering her.
The Day of the Disaster fundamentally changes the household when Nico is transformed into a small child. The story then follows Morihito and the others raising her through the years she has lost, recreating experiences and helping her relearn magic until she eventually returns to her teenage state.
Relationships
Relationships
Morihito Otogi is Nico's childhood friend, guardian, familiar, housemate, and first love. She affectionately calls him "Moi" or "Moi-chan" and makes little effort to conceal her romantic interest, although his serious personality and dedication to protecting her initially prevent their relationship from progressing as quickly as she hopes.
Ibuki Wakatsuki is Nico's mother and a witch with prophetic magic. Her prediction of an approaching disaster is the reason she entrusts Nico's protection to Morihito.
Kanshi Kazamatsuri is Nico's childhood friend and tengu familiar. Their easygoing personalities make them natural companions, although Kanshi's tendency to encourage foolish ideas can amplify Nico's own impulsiveness.
Keigo Magami begins as Nico's classmate and later becomes one of her familiars. Although Keigo initially cooperates with a warlock because he hopes to obtain treatment for his injured mother, Nico accepts him after the conflict and helps give him a place within the household.
Nemu Miyao is a fellow witch who becomes Nico's friend. Nico's openness contrasts with Nemu's reserved upbringing and helps her become more comfortable socializing with others.
Miharu Kiryu becomes another familiar and resident of the Otogi household. His magical knowledge and vampiric abilities make him particularly useful when the group encounters unfamiliar supernatural phenomena.
Ban is the dragon Nico summons as a familiar. As another female resident closely connected to Nico, Ban becomes a companion with whom she can discuss things she does not always share with the male familiars.
Moi remains the nickname through which Nico most often expresses the familiarity of her relationship with Morihito.
