Satoru Kakuta

Kakuta is a straightforward and cooperative team member. He accepts his reserve position without the resentment that might accompany spending most major games behind one of Kanagawa's best centers.

His willingness to enter difficult matchups reflects the attitude of Shohoku's established bench. Kakuta knows that he cannot duplicate Akagi's impact, but still performs the assignment given to him.

He also witnesses Sakuragi's extraordinary rate of improvement at close range. Practice makes the contrast particularly obvious, since the inexperienced first-year quickly develops athletic skills that Kakuta cannot match.

Kakuta plays primarily as a center and provides basic interior defense, rebounding and positioning. His experience gives him conventional basketball fundamentals, but he lacks the size and athletic ability required to compete evenly with elite national-level big men.

Sakuragi's improvement eventually makes him difficult for Kakuta to contain even in practice. The comparison demonstrates how rapidly Sakuragi's physical gifts begin translating into functional basketball.

Kakuta's limitations become especially pronounced against Masahiro Nobe of Sannoh. Nobe's size, strength and screen-out technique exhaust him during their brief matchup.

Kakuta is one of Shohoku's recurring reserves and participates in training throughout the team's prefectural campaign. His presence becomes important whenever Anzai needs to rest or temporarily replace one of the regular interior players.

The anime expands some of his tournament contributions, including hustle plays during Shohoku's early qualifying matches.

During the Sannoh game, Kakuta is briefly required to battle Nobe while Sakuragi is unavailable. The physical mismatch emphasizes both Sannoh's extraordinary depth and how much Shohoku has come to depend on Sakuragi's rebounding.

Takenori Akagi is Shohoku's starting center and the player ahead of Kakuta in the rotation.
